“Joy Bangladesh, victory for Bengal
Victory for Bengal, surely it shall be
Millions of souls awaken together in the dark night
The time for a new sun has come…”

Few songs have captured the soul of a nation as powerfully as Joy Bangladesh, victory for Bengal. This anthem was not just a melody; it became a rallying cry that inspired students, farmers, workers, and citizens across Bangladesh to rise against oppression during the nation’s liberation struggle. Its stirring words and compelling music transformed it into the de facto war hymn of the Bangladesh Liberation War, uniting people beyond religion, class, or region. It also served as the inaugural tune of the broadcasts from the independent Bengali radio.

Creators Behind the Iconic Song

The enduring legacy of the song is the result of the collaboration between Anwar Parvez, the composer, and Gazi Mazharul Anwar, the lyricist. Both men left an indelible mark on Bangladesh’s cultural and national heritage. Parvez passed away on 17 June 2006, while Gazi Mazharul Anwar died on 4 September 2022. In a 2002 interview with Prothom Alo, Parvez recounted the dramatic and daring circumstances under which the song was created.

The Story of Its Creation

Parvez recalled:
“In 1970, I was directing music for Fakrul Bhai’s film Joy Bangladesh. Gazi Mazharul Anwar had written remarkable lyrics, but there was no suitable place to compose the music. We decided to stand on the street opposite what was then called the Second Capital, now the Parliament building, and complete the composition. Within twenty minutes, we had produced what would become Joy Bangladesh, victory for Bengal.”

Recording the song was fraught with danger, as military patrols were active throughout Dhaka. The team used a studio on Indira Road, recording deep into the night under strict secrecy. News of the recording spread rapidly, and crowds gathered outside chanting the anthem. To avoid arrest or interference, the team had to escape through a back exit. Later, the film’s full score was recorded in Lahore, Pakistan, under the pseudonym Sanghat, with work divided across multiple studios to maintain secrecy.

Enduring Impact

Gazi Mazharul Anwar reflected on the song’s significance:
“Anwar Parvez’s music brought my words to life, embedding them in the hearts of our people. Joy Bangladesh, victory for Bengal inspired the nation throughout the nine months of the liberation war. It was more than a song—it was a dream, a declaration, and a symbol of freedom.”
