In a solemn ceremony marking the Great Independence and National Day, President Md. Sahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman paid tribute to the valiant martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the Liberation War.

At dawn on Thursday, both leaders laid floral wreaths at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar, expressing profound respect for the nation’s greatest sons. Following the wreath-laying, they observed a moment of silence in honour of the fallen.

A ceremonial guard comprising personnel from the Bangladesh Army, Navy, and Air Force presented a state salute, accompanied by the mournful notes of a bugle.

The ceremony was attended by the Chief Justice, members of the Cabinet, the three service chiefs, war-injured freedom fighters, relatives of martyrs, diplomats, political leaders, and senior military and civilian officials.

Subsequently, as party leader, Tarique Rahman, accompanied by senior leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), laid wreaths at the memorial to honour the memory of the valiant martyrs. In parallel, the Prime Minister also placed a floral tribute on behalf of the Cabinet.

The event concluded with prayers and supplications seeking peace for the souls of the martyrs and prosperity for the nation. After the ceremony, Tarique Rahman exchanged greetings with war-injured freedom fighters, bereaved families of martyrs, and invited dignitaries. He then signed the visitors’ book at the memorial.
