Western intelligence agencies have reported that the Russian Federation is providing significant assistance to Iran amid the ongoing conflict with the United States and Israel, including the transfer of drones as well as food and medical supplies. The Financial Times reported this development on Thursday, citing multiple intelligence sources.

According to those sources, discussions between senior Russian and Iranian officials about such support began soon after coordinated US–Israeli strikes on Iranian targets at the end of February 2026. By early March, Moscow had commenced phased deliveries of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), alongside humanitarian aid, to Tehran. The shipment of these supplies is expected to conclude by the end of March.

In addition to these material transfers, Western officials say that Russia has been supplying Iran with detailed intelligence, particularly regarding the whereabouts of US military bases, naval vessels and strategic assets in the Middle East. This data reportedly includes satellite imagery and targeting information designed to assist Iran in planning strikes.

When approached for comment, the Kremlin did not deny that contact with Iranian leadership had intensified. A spokesperson emphasised that a great deal of disinformation was circulating but acknowledged that Moscow maintains regular dialogue with Tehran.

Russia and Iran have a longstanding strategic relationship, dating back years and encompassing trade, energy and defence cooperation. In recent years, Iran provided thousands of so‑called Shahed loitering munitions to Russia for use in its war in Ukraine, and Moscow has, in turn, begun producing similar drones domestically.

Summary of Reported Russian Assistance to Iran

The following table outlines the principal forms of support reportedly being provided by Russia:

Type of AssistanceDescription
DronesDelivery of unmanned aerial vehicles to bolster Iran’s aerial capabilities.
Food suppliesHumanitarian provisions sent to support civilian and military needs.
Medical suppliesMedicines and related equipment delivered as part of the aid packages.
Intelligence supportSharing of satellite imagery and targeting data on US and allied military positions.

Observers suggest that these efforts signal a deepening of cooperation between Moscow and Tehran at a time of escalated regional warfare. Some analysts argue that the military dimension of this assistance represents a significant shift in Russia’s posture, given its own military commitments in Ukraine and its cautious diplomatic approach to the Middle East.
