A significant quantity of smuggled gold, valued at approximately BDT 3.8 billion, has been recovered from a Bangladesh Biman flight arriving from Dubai at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
The seizure took place on Saturday at around 9:08 pm, when flight BG-348 landed at the airport’s Boarding Bridge C-02. Acting on prior intelligence, law enforcement and aviation security agencies had placed the aircraft under close surveillance even before its arrival.
Following the landing, a coordinated operation was launched by airport authorities in conjunction with intelligence personnel and members of the Aviation Security (AVSEC) team. During a detailed search of the aircraft, officials discovered 153 gold bars concealed inside the cargo compartment. The contraband had been carefully hidden within a toilet panel, wrapped in white cloth to avoid detection.
Officials stated that the concealment method suggested a well-planned smuggling attempt, likely involving individuals with detailed knowledge of aircraft structures and airport procedures. The recovery highlights ongoing concerns over transnational gold trafficking networks operating through international air routes.
Airport authorities have reiterated that security monitoring has been significantly strengthened in recent years, with increased reliance on intelligence-led operations and inter-agency coordination. They further emphasised that such enforcement actions will continue in order to protect national assets and prevent the misuse of international aviation channels for illegal activities.
Investigations are currently underway to identify those responsible for the smuggling attempt, including any potential involvement of ground handling staff or external criminal networks. Officials have not yet disclosed any arrests in connection with the seizure.
