Lionel Messi has propelled Inter Miami to their maiden MLS Cup final, and the Argentine maestro did so in spectacular fashion. Inter Miami dismantled New York City FC 5-1 in the Eastern Conference playoff final yesterday, with Messi at the heart of the triumph.

In the final, they will meet Vancouver Whitecaps, who beat San Diego 3-1 in the Western Conference decider. The match, scheduled for 7 December (Bangladesh time), promises both a clash of clubs and a high-stakes personal duel between Messi and Bayern Munich’s Thomas Müller.

Earlier in the season, Inter Miami met Vancouver in the CONCACAF Champions Cup semi-finals. Vancouver secured a 5-1 aggregate win, but Müller was not yet part of the team. His presence in the MLS Cup final heightens the stakes and intensifies the intrigue.

The two stars have faced off ten times in total, with Müller’s teams victorious on seven occasions. From Germany’s 1-0 extra-time win in the 2014 World Cup final to Bayern’s 8-2 demolition of Barcelona in the 2020 Champions League semi-final, Müller has dominated. Messi’s solitary competitive victory over Müller came in the first leg of the 2014-15 Champions League semi-final.

Müller, however, is keen to shift the narrative from individual to team focus. “It’s not about Messi versus Müller. It’s Miami versus Vancouver. We are a very balanced side, and while they may lean on Messi, our strength lies in our unity,” he said. “Yesterday’s performance showcased our attacking and defensive capabilities.”

Still, the Messi-Müller showdown adds undeniable appeal. Müller acknowledged, “When two stars like this meet, everyone watches. Greater attention increases the value of the players, the team, and the club itself.” Fans can expect fireworks on the pitch when these two titans clash.
