Remembering Humayun Ahmed, the Magician of Rain and Moonlight

There are a few stars in the sky of Bengali literature whose light never fades. Humayun Ahmed was one of them. He was far more than a writer; he was the voice of an era, the embodiment of emotion, the heartbeat of a generation, and a trusted companion to millions of Bengalis in their moments of solitude.

Today, 19 July, marks one of the saddest days in the history of Bengali literature. On this day in 2012, after a long battle with cancer, Humayun Ahmed passed away at Bellevue Hospital in New York. Yet death could not distance him from his readers. He continues to live through his countless novels, short stories, television dramas, films, and the unforgettable characters he created.

Himu still wanders through the streets of Dhaka in his trademark yellow panjabi, embracing life’s mysteries with quiet confidence. Misir Ali continues to illuminate the darkest corners of the human mind with reason and logic. Rupa’s silent, unwavering love still stirs readers’ hearts. Whether in Nondito Noroke, Kothao Keu Nei, Shankhanil Karagar, Krishnopokkho, or the stories of Shuvro and Baker Bhai, Humayun Ahmed’s spirit remains vividly present.

A Heart That Belonged to the Rain

During the final chapter of his life, Humayun Ahmed travelled to New York for cancer treatment. Outside his hospital window, the city lay buried beneath a blanket of snow. Gazing silently at the white landscape, he turned to someone close to him and said with a deep sigh:

“I don’t like this snow. I keep thinking that, at this very moment, heavy rain is falling in Nuhash Palli. Water is dripping from the leaves onto the ground beneath the trees, and the frogs are calling. Will I ever be able to stand in that rain again?”

Those few words revealed everything about the man. His soul belonged not to the snow-covered streets of a distant city, but to the rain-soaked soil of Bengal, its trees, ponds, monsoon skies, and the simple beauty of rural life. His bond with nature was inseparable from his identity as a writer.

He Returned Home at Last

In the end, he did return to Bangladesh—but not with the joy of recovery. He came home in silence, resting in a coffin. As he had wished, he was laid to rest beneath the litchi trees of his beloved Nuhash Palli.

Sometimes it feels as though every monsoon shower still falls gently upon his grave. Every full moon seems to pause beside him, while the rustling leaves whisper stories known only to the characters he brought to life.

The Legacy of a Literary Giant

Humayun Ahmed made his literary debut in 1972 with Nondito Noroke, a novel that immediately established him as one of the brightest new voices in Bengali literature. Over the following decades, he wrote more than four hundred books, created numerous iconic television dramas, and directed several acclaimed films, becoming one of the most widely read and beloved authors in the Bengali language.

His remarkable contributions earned him some of Bangladesh’s highest literary honours, including the Bangla Academy Literary Award, the Ekushey Padak, and the Independence Award. Yet his greatest achievement lay in his extraordinary ability to speak to ordinary people. Through simple, graceful language, he explored love, loneliness, family, the Liberation War, science, faith, humanity, and the deepest questions of life, making profound ideas accessible to millions.

The Writer Who Beautified Solitude

Humayun Ahmed taught his readers that solitude could be beautiful. He became a quiet companion in the sound of falling rain, the glow of moonlight, the rhythm of flowing rivers, peaceful afternoons, and sleepless nights spent turning the pages of a book. His stories made readers laugh, cry, dream, and confront the realities of life with renewed courage.

People may pass away, but true creators never die. As long as the Bengali language endures, Himu will continue his endless walk, Misir Ali will keep searching for answers, Rupa will wait with silent devotion, and the rain will forever fall over Nuhash Palli.

On the anniversary of his passing, we pay our deepest respect, boundless love, and everlasting gratitude to this timeless magician of Bengali literature.

You are no longer with us, yet you remain present—in every rain-soaked afternoon, every moonlit night, every page of your books, and in the hearts of Bengalis around the world.

A heartfelt tribute to Humayun Ahmed.
