The serene landscapes of Narsingdi have been stained by a harrowing tale of brutality and systemic failure. A 15-year-old girl, whose family sought nothing more than the basic right to justice, was allegedly abducted and murdered in the Mahishashura Union of Narsingdi Sadar. Her body was recovered from a mustard field on Thursday afternoon, sending shockwaves through the local community and igniting a firestorm of public outrage.
The victim’s family, who had been residing in a rented house in Mahishashura for several years, led a modest life. Her father, a hardworking labourer at a local textile mill, struggled to provide for his wife, son, and daughter. However, their humble peace was shattered approximately 15 days ago.
According to family sources, a local youth known as Noora, alongside five or six accomplices, intercepted the teenager on her way home. They reportedly muffled her cries and forcibly took her to a secluded location where she was subjected to a horrific gang rape. Instead of receiving immediate legal protection, the family’s attempt to seek redress through traditional social channels proved to be a fatal misstep.
In the aftermath of the assault, the family approached Ahmadullah, a former member of Ward 9 of the Mahishashura Union Parishad, pleading for justice. However, rather than facilitating a police report, the former representative reportedly attempted to "settle" the matter through informal arbitration. The family alleges they were pressured to accept a compromise and were even advised to vacate the area for their own safety.
This culture of "compromise" in cases of heinous crimes not only emboldened the perpetrators but also infuriated them. Enraged that the family had dared to complain to a public representative, Noora and his gang began monitoring the family’s movements, escalating the sense of insecurity.
On Wednesday night, fearing for his daughter’s life, the father decided to move her to her aunt's house—a perceived sanctuary. At approximately 8:00 PM, while they were traversing the Bilpar area, they were ambushed by Noora and six other men. In a heart-wrenching display of cowardice, the group overpowered the father and snatched the girl away. Despite his desperate resistance and a night-long search by the family, the teenager remained missing until the following morning.
At around 9:30 AM on Thursday, local villagers discovered a lifeless body lying in a mustard field situated between the villages of Bilpar and Darikandi. Upon notification, the Madhabdi Police arrived at the scene to recover the remains. Following a preliminary inquest, the body was sent to the Narsingdi Sadar Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination.
