A series of devastating industrial accidents has plunged Thailand’s construction sector into crisis, after a second fatal crane collapse in as many days brought the total death toll to 34. The latest tragedy occurred on Thursday in Samut Sakhon province, on the outskirts of Bangkok, claiming two lives and leaving at least five others injured.
The Samut Sakhon incident unfolded at a major infrastructure site on the Rama II Expressway. According to Police Colonel Sittiporn Kasi, a massive crane being utilised for the construction of an elevated highway buckled and plummeted onto the busy roadway below. Dramatic footage from the scene near the Paris In Garden Hotel depicted a landscape of twisted metal and thick dust, as emergency services scrambled to extract victims from the wreckage.
This disaster follows an even more catastrophic event on Wednesday in the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima. In that instance, a colossal crane collapsed onto a moving passenger train during work on a high-speed rail link—a flagship project developed in collaboration with China. The impact caused the train to derail and briefly ignite, resulting in 32 fatalities among the 195 passengers on board.
Thailand’s Transport Minister, Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, confirmed a disturbing link between the two events: both projects were under the management of the same firm, Italian-Thai Development. This revelation has sparked intense public fury and calls for a complete overhaul of safety protocols within the company.
Summary of Recent Crane Disasters (January 2026):
| Date | Location | Project Type | Casualties | Primary Cause |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wednesday | Nakhon Ratchasima | High-Speed Rail | 32 Dead | Crane fell on moving train |
| Thursday | Samut Sakhon | Elevated Highway | 2 Dead, 5 Injured | Structural failure over road |
| Total | 34 Fatalities |
The site of Thursday’s collapse, the Rama II Expressway, is notorious among locals. Currently undergoing several large-scale infrastructure upgrades, including new toll roads, the stretch has earned the grim moniker “Death Road” due to a history of falling debris and construction mishaps.
The Transport Minister has ordered a comprehensive investigation into both tragedies, hinting at severe legal and professional consequences for those found responsible. For now, all work at sites managed by Italian-Thai Development has been suspended pending safety certifications. The high-speed rail project, intended to be a symbol of Thai-Chinese cooperation, now stands as a site of national mourning.
