In a tragic accident on the Dhaka–Sylhet Highway in Ashuganj Upazila, Brahmanbaria, two young men lost their lives on Wednesday evening following a head-on collision between their motorcycle and a truck. The incident occurred at approximately 6:30 pm on the Sonarampur Bridge.
The deceased have been identified as Samaun Mia (21), son of Shahidul Islam from Laxmipur in Kishoreganj’s Bhairab Upazila, and Abdur Rahman (23), son of Makrul Molla from the same area. According to local sources, the two had been close friends since childhood and were out riding together when the accident took place.
Eyewitnesses reported that while returning from Bhairab in the evening, their motorcycle collided head-on with a truck approaching from the opposite direction on the bridge. The force of the impact caused the motorcycle to be completely mangled, leaving both riders critically injured.
Local residents quickly intervened, rushing the injured to Ashuganj Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctors declared both men dead on arrival.
Surail Khatihata Highway Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Md. Jahangir Alam, stated, “The truck involved in the accident fled the scene immediately. The bodies have been handed over to the families, who are expected to file a formal complaint today. We are making every effort to identify and apprehend the truck driver promptly.”
For clarity, the following table summarises the key information about the incident:
| Location | Time | Victim Name | Age | Motorcycle Type | Preliminary Cause |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sonarampur Bridge, Ashuganj | 14 January 2026, 6:30 PM | Samaun Mia | 21 | Standard Motorcycle | Head-on collision with oncoming truck |
| Abdur Rahman | 23 | Standard Motorcycle | Head-on collision with oncoming truck |
Local residents have highlighted that the Ashuganj section of the Dhaka–Sylhet Highway is particularly prone to accidents due to frequent traffic congestion and inadequate traffic management. The risk is notably higher in the evening, when vehicles often move at reduced speeds, creating hazards on bridges such as Sonarampur.
Police officials confirmed that legal action will be taken against the truck driver once identified. In addition, local authorities are planning a road safety campaign in Ashuganj and surrounding areas to raise awareness and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the primary cause of this accident was reckless driving by the truck and general neglect of road safety protocols. Authorities have urged motorists to exercise increased caution, particularly on congested highway stretches.
