Tragedy struck the remote Haor region of Khaliajuri in Netrokona on Saturday morning after two toddlers lost their lives in a tragic drowning incident just yards from a local educational institution.
The deceased have been identified as five-year-old Obaidullah, son of Selim Miah, and four-year-old Shahadat, son of Sekul Miah. Both children were residents of Jaherpur village, situated within the Khaliajuri upazila.
According to local residents and police reports, the two young boys were playing unsupervised near the premises of Jaherpur Government Primary School at around 10:00 am. While playing close to the edge, both toddlers slipped into a deep, waterfilled ditch (doba) adjacent to the school grounds. By the time bystanders noticed their absence and pulled them from the water, both children were unresponsive. Emergency CPR efforts by locals proved unsuccessful, and the toddlers were pronounced dead shortly after being recovered.
Nasiruddin, the Officer-in-Charge of Khaliajuri Police Station, confirmed the incident, stating that an unnatural death case has been formally registered in connection with the drownings. Following the completion of mandatory legal and procedural formalities, police handed over the bodies to the grieving families without demanding an autopsy, yielding to the requests of the victims’ relatives and community elders.
