Sanai Takaichi on Course to Become Japan’s First Female Prime Minister ,Who is She?

Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has elected former Minister of Economic Security Sanai Takaichi as its new leader, bringing her to the threshold of becoming the country’s first female Prime Minister.

According to the Associated Press (AP), in the final round of the LDP leadership election held on Saturday, 4 October, Takaichi defeated Shinjiro Koizumi, the son of former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and the current Minister of Agriculture.

  • In the first round, Takaichi received 183 votes but did not secure a majority, leading to a runoff.
  • In the final round, votes from 295 party parliamentarians and nearly one million party members secured her victory, confirming her leadership of the LDP.

Reuters reports that Sanai Takaichi is well-known in Japanese politics for her hardline conservative ideology.

  • She is a staunch supporter of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s economic programme, “Abenomics”, and has championed several controversial policies.
  • Her positions include:
    • Regular visits to the Yasukuni Shrine, a source of diplomatic tension in Asia.
    • Advocating for revisions to Japan’s pacifist constitution.
    • Strengthening security cooperation with Taiwan.
    • Signalling the possibility of renegotiating investment agreements with the United States.

Before the runoff vote, addressing party members, Takaichi said:
“People across the country wanted to know what the LDP truly stands for — that question inspired me. I want to transform public concern into hope.”

The AP notes that Takaichi’s position as Prime Minister will be formally confirmed in the parliamentary vote in mid-October. Upon assuming office, she will face a series of diplomatic challenges.

  • One key moment will be the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea at the end of October, where she may meet US President Donald Trump.
  • Analysts suggest that during the meeting, Trump may pressure Japan to increase its defence spending.

The international community and citizens across Japan are closely watching whether Takaichi’s leadership will steer the LDP in a new direction.
