Massive Fire Engulfs Gazipur Jute Warehouses

A devastating fire swept through several jute waste warehouses in Gazipur city on Thursday afternoon, triggering widespread concern among local residents and prompting a large-scale emergency response by the Fire Service and Civil Defence. The incident occurred in the Dewaliabari area under Konabari Police Station, an industrial zone known for storing jute scraps and textile by-products used in recycling and secondary manufacturing.

According to officials, the fire first broke out at approximately 4:15 pm in a jute warehouse located in the Kathaltola section of Dewaliabari. Local residents noticed thick plumes of smoke rising from the structure and immediately alerted the fire service. Within minutes, the blaze intensified and spread rapidly to adjacent warehouses, fuelled by highly flammable jute materials stored in large quantities.

Initially, two fire-fighting units from the Konabari Fire Service Station arrived at the scene and began efforts to contain the flames. However, as the fire grew in intensity and expanded across multiple storage facilities, additional support was requested. Four more units were subsequently deployed from the Sarabo and DBL fire stations, bringing the total number of responding units to six.

Firefighters faced significant challenges due to the nature of the stored materials, narrow access roads, and the dense clustering of warehouses. Despite these obstacles, crews worked continuously to prevent the fire from spreading further into nearby residential and commercial areas. Law enforcement officers assisted by cordoning off the area and managing crowds, while local volunteers helped remove nearby combustible items as a precautionary measure.

Mohammad Mamun, Deputy Director of the Gazipur Fire Service, confirmed that several jute warehouses had been affected. He stated that six fire service units were actively engaged in controlling the blaze and cooling the surrounding structures. “At this stage, the cause of the fire and the extent of the financial losses cannot be determined,” he said, adding that no immediate reports of casualties had been received.

Although no injuries or fatalities were reported, the incident has reignited concerns about fire safety standards in industrial storage zones across Gazipur. Residents have called for stricter enforcement of safety regulations, improved warehouse spacing, and regular inspections to prevent similar incidents in the future.
