Pakistan’s Match Boycott: How Will India Respond on 15 February?

Pakistan is set to travel to Sri Lanka today to participate in the upcoming T20 World Cup, where all of its matches for the tournament are scheduled to be played on Sri Lankan soil. The team was expected to play two preparatory matches before taking on the Netherlands in their opening group-stage fixture on 7 February. However, Pakistan has now announced that it will not play its highly anticipated match against India, scheduled for 15 February in Colombo. The announcement was made late on Sunday via the official social media channels of the Pakistan government.

All of Pakistan’s World Cup fixtures are being hosted in Sri Lanka. The decision not to play India means that the team will not take the field on that date. For India, this raises questions about how the match will be handled, given that India was scheduled to travel to Sri Lanka specifically for the encounter with Pakistan.

According to a report by news agency ANI, a senior official from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), who requested anonymity, confirmed that India will adhere to its original schedule. “India will travel to Sri Lanka on 15 February and follow all ICC protocols. The team will conduct practice sessions and hold press conferences as per the tournament routine,” the official stated. “India will arrive at the stadium on time and await the match referee’s announcement regarding the official cancellation of the game.”

In the 2026 T20 World Cup, India and Pakistan are placed in Group A, along with the Netherlands, the United States, and Namibia. The group stage schedule requires India to play the Netherlands, the United States, and Namibia at home, while travelling to Sri Lanka solely for the Pakistan fixture. India’s opening match is against the United States on 7 February in Mumbai, followed by a game against Namibia on 12 February in Delhi, before travelling to Colombo for the Pakistan match.

Although the Pakistan government has not publicly provided a formal explanation for boycotting the match, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has, over the past two weeks, repeatedly criticised the International Cricket Council (ICC) for alleged double standards. Last year, India cited security concerns for its withdrawal from certain fixtures, which the ICC addressed. However, the PCB claims that similar concerns raised regarding Bangladesh were not taken seriously, raising questions about the ICC’s “principled position,” according to Pakistan officials.
