Tragedy has struck the academic community of Mymensingh following the recovery of the body of Nurullah Shaon, a 26-year-old student of Anand Mohan College. Shaon had been missing for two days after he and a classmate were ambushed by a violent gang of teenage muggers while walking along the banks of the Brahmaputra River. His remains were discovered floating near the Zainul Abedin Park area late on Friday night, approximately 48 hours after the initial confrontation.
On Wednesday afternoon, Shaon, a third-year Chemistry student originally from Katiadi, Kishoreganj, ventured across the river with his close friend, Manjurul Ahsan (Riyad). As dusk fell around 6:00 pm, the pair was surrounded by a gang of at least seven youths, described by witnesses as a “teenage gang.”
The assailants demanded valuables, but when the students explained they carried only enough cash for their return boat fare, the encounter turned physical. Shaon’s refusal to submit led to a severe beating. In a desperate attempt to escape, the two friends fled in opposite directions:
Manjurul was pursued by three attackers but managed to plunge into the Brahmaputra and swim to safety.
Shaon was chased by four members of the gang and vanished into the darkness.
While Manjurul successfully reached the shore and alerted locals—leading to the immediate apprehension of a 15-year-old suspect—Shaon remained unaccounted for. On Thursday morning, search teams discovered Shaon’s bag and shoes abandoned on the riverbank, prompting a formal dive operation by the Fire Service and Civil Defence. However, the murky waters yielded no results until Friday night, when local boatmen spotted a body caught on a sandbar.

The recovery of the body sparked emotional scenes at the Mymensingh Medical College morgue, where classmates and family gathered to mourn. There is growing frustration regarding the police response; Shoaib Akhter, a friend of the deceased, alleged that despite providing the names and addresses of the gang members early on, the authorities were slow to act.
Nazmus Sakib, the Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali Model Police Station, confirmed that a murder case has been registered following a complaint by Shaon’s mother, Sahida Begum. While one teenager is currently detained, a manhunt is underway for the remaining suspects. “We are awaiting the post-mortem results to determine the exact cause of death,” the OC stated, “but our operations to secure the remaining fugitives are ongoing.”
