In a striking act of political reassertion, local activists have reportedly breached the padlocks of a long-shuttered Awami League office in the Betagi Upazila of Barguna. The incident, which took place on Friday, marks a significant moment in the local political landscape as supporters attempt to reclaim physical spaces that have remained derelict since the mass uprisings of 2024.
The event unfolded at the Bura Mazumdar Union office situated in the Badnikhali area. According to local witnesses and video footage circulating on social media, a group of activists arrived at the premises, which had been abandoned since the fall of the previous administration on 5 August 2024.
Upon successfully breaking the locks, the individuals entered the building carrying the national flag. Their activities inside were recorded and later shared online, showcasing several symbolic acts of reinstatement:
The mounting of portraits featuring Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the party president, Sheikh Hasina, on the interior walls.
The hoisting of the national flag atop the office structure.
The installation of fresh party signage and banners on the building’s façade.
This recent move in Bura Mazumdar is not an isolated occurrence. Earlier this week, a similar attempt at reoccupation took place at the party’s municipal office in Betagi Market. However, that instance resulted in immediate confrontation. Within hours of the activists entering the building and hanging portraits, a counter-demonstration by local residents and students led to a second breach of the office. On that occasion, the newly hung portraits were reportedly removed and set ablaze in the street.
| Date | Location | Primary Event | Resulting Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 Aug 2024 | Betagi Upazila | National Uprising | Offices vandalised, padlocked, and abandoned. |
| Mon, 16 Feb | Betagi Municipality | Reoccupation Attempt | Portraits removed and burnt by counter-protesters. |
| Fri, 20 Feb | Bura Mazumdar Union | Lock-breaking & Hoisting | Successful entry; video evidence viral. |
The political atmosphere in Barguna has remained tense following the conclusion of the 13th General Election. While many party members and affiliated student leaders remained in hiding or maintained a strictly low profile for over a year, there is a burgeoning trend of activists re-emerging to test the waters of the current administration.
The use of digital platforms to broadcast these “reclamations” is viewed by analysts as a calculated effort to galvanise the party’s grassroots supporters. However, the move has also stoked fears of renewed civil friction. Local law enforcement authorities are reportedly monitoring the situation closely to prevent further outbreaks of violence between opposing political factions.
