Oscars Speech Controversy Sparks Producer Response

The 2026 Oscars ceremony, held on 15 March, celebrated cinematic achievements with glamour and excitement—but not every moment shone. Controversy arose when the songwriters of “Golden” from K-pop sensation Demon Hunters—the first-ever K-pop track to win Best Original Song—were prematurely cut off during their acceptance speech.

After performer Ejae stepped aside to allow a fellow songwriter to speak, the orchestra played them offstage just as the telecast cut to a commercial break. The moment sparked immediate backlash on social media, with fans lamenting that the artists were denied their full opportunity to address the audience.

Rob Mills, executive vice president of unscripted and alternative entertainment at Walt Disney Television and a key producer of the ceremony, acknowledged the issue in an interview with Variety on 16 March.

“One thing, as we post mortem for next year, will be to look at how we’re handling speeches,” Mills said. “I don’t know what the most elegant solution is, but it’s obviously something we should examine really, really thoroughly.”

Mills admitted the difficulty of cutting off a winner mid-speech, recognising it as “their one moment” in the spotlight. He suggested potential solutions, including designating a single speaker per award or continuing speeches backstage with a social media feed to capture the remainder. His priority, he said, is to develop a system that allows all winners to fully share their thoughts and gratitude.

The Golden incident was not isolated. The Best Live Action Short Film category ended in a historic tie, and Alexandre Singh, director of Two People Exchanging Saliva, encountered similar issues. As he approached the stage following the producers of The Singers, the microphone began to lower mid-approach, cutting his speech short.

Conan O’Brien, who hosted the event, quipped wryly about the mishap:

“I just want to say congratulations to both winners. You just ruined 22 million Oscar pools. I know we’re tight, but retracting a microphone on a man as he’s speaking is hilarious.”

The incidents highlight ongoing challenges in balancing live television timing with the celebration of winners’ achievements. Mills reiterated his commitment to refining the process for future ceremonies.
