The diplomatic community has been shaken after Mohamed Safa, the Permanent Representative of the Patriotic Vision Organisation (PVO) to the United Nations, announced a suspension of his nearly 12-year diplomatic career, issuing a highly controversial statement on social media platform X. Safa alleged that the United Nations is allegedly preparing for a scenario involving the use of nuclear weapons against Iran.
In his post, Safa warned that the gravity of the situation is not being fully understood by the global public. He claimed that international institutions are actively considering contingency planning for a potential nuclear strike on the Islamic Republic of Iran. He emphasised that Tehran, a densely populated metropolis of nearly 10 million residents, would face catastrophic consequences in such an event.
Safa stated that he was compelled to step down in order to disclose what he described as critical information. He said he had chosen to abandon his diplomatic role to avoid being “a witness or participant” in what he characterised as a potential humanitarian catastrophe, invoking fears of a so-called “nuclear winter”.
He further alleged that senior officials within the United Nations were suppressing dissenting voices under the influence of a powerful lobbying network. According to Safa, institutional leadership has refused to classify the situations in Gaza and Lebanon as genocide, war crimes, or ethnic cleansing, while also avoiding explicit legal condemnation of military actions involving Iran.
Safa also claimed that since October 2023 he and his family had received multiple death threats as a consequence of his attempts to raise concerns publicly. He accused international media and social platforms of propagating what he described as a “false narrative” regarding Iran’s nuclear threat, suggesting that such messaging is deliberately misleading global public opinion. He concluded by calling on citizens to take to the streets, asserting that only public mobilisation could prevent escalation.
Prior to his resignation announcement, similar concerns were voiced by Dr Hanan Balkhy, the World Health Organization’s Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean. She reportedly stated that the organisation is preparing for worst-case nuclear scenarios in the region, stressing that such an event would have consequences lasting decades and would be extremely difficult to mitigate, even with extensive preparedness.
The claims, however, remain unverified by independent international bodies, and no formal confirmation has been issued by the United Nations regarding preparations for nuclear engagement involving Iran.
| Issue | Safa’s Claims | International Institutional Position |
|---|---|---|
| Nuclear contingency planning | UN preparing for potential nuclear use involving Iran | No official confirmation |
| Freedom of expression | Suppression of dissent within UN structures | Not formally addressed |
| Humanitarian assessment | Risk of nuclear winter and mass civilian harm | General concern over catastrophic scenarios |
| Regional conflict framing | Political manipulation of global narratives | Ongoing risk monitoring and preparedness |
The episode has intensified debate over transparency, geopolitical narratives, and the credibility of international institutions. While Safa’s statements have circulated widely online, they have yet to be substantiated through verified diplomatic or institutional documentation.
