Bangladesh Enforces 58-Day Sea Fishing Ban

A 58-day nationwide ban on fishing in the Bay of Bengal comes into effect from midnight on Tuesday (14 April), as part of government efforts to protect marine biodiversity and ensure the sustainable breeding of fish stocks.

The seasonal restriction, which will remain in force until 11 June, is expected to leave around 64,000 registered marine fishermen in Bhola district temporarily without work, raising concerns over household income, loan repayments, and day-to-day survival.

Fishing Fleet Returns to Shore

Following the announcement of the ban, most deep-sea fishing trawlers have already begun returning to shore. By Tuesday night, vessels had anchored at several key landing stations, including Patar Khal in Daulatkhan, Samraj in Char Fasson, Nurabad, as well as Ramnewaj and Hajirhat in Monpura.

Fishermen across these coastal areas have been seen busily unloading equipment, mending fishing nets, and repairing boats in preparation for the two-month suspension period.

Economic Anxiety Among Fishermen

While the ban is widely recognised as necessary for ecological balance, it has triggered significant financial anxiety among fishing communities. Many fishermen are particularly concerned about how they will manage daily household expenses as well as instalments on loans taken from NGOs and moneylenders.

Fishermen have expressed fears that the prolonged suspension of fishing activities could deepen existing debt cycles, especially for low-income households heavily dependent on seasonal catches.

Some community members have also raised concerns about irregularities in the distribution of government support, alleging that genuine fishermen are sometimes excluded due to local influence or administrative inefficiencies.

Government Support Measures

According to the District Fisheries Office, there are 63,954 registered marine fishermen in Bhola. As part of the government’s support programme, each registered fisherman will receive a total of 77 kilograms of rice in two phases during the ban period.

A breakdown of the assistance is outlined below:

Category Details
Fishing Ban Period 14 April – 11 June (58 days)
Registered Fishermen (Bhola) 63,954
Total Food Assistance 77 kg rice per fisherman (in two phases)
Distribution Method Government relief programme

However, fishermen have demanded reforms in the distribution system, suggesting that direct cash transfers via mobile financial services would be more transparent and efficient than in-kind rice distribution.

They argue that such a system would reduce corruption risks and ensure timely support reaches those most in need.

Fisheries Department Response

District Fisheries Officer Md Iqbal Hossain said the ban has been introduced to increase fish production and ensure long-term sustainability of marine resources.

He confirmed that all registered fishermen will be brought under the food assistance programme and that strict monitoring will be maintained in coastal waters throughout the ban period.

“Law enforcement agencies will closely monitor the sea to ensure compliance,” he said. “Anyone found violating the ban and engaging in fishing activities will face legal action.”

He further added that while the short-term economic impact is acknowledged, the long-term benefits of the restriction would ultimately be enjoyed by the fishing community through increased fish availability and improved catches in the future.

Balancing Conservation and Livelihoods

The annual fishing ban is part of Bangladesh’s broader marine conservation strategy aimed at protecting breeding cycles during peak spawning seasons. Officials maintain that such measures are essential to prevent depletion of fish stocks in the Bay of Bengal.

However, for coastal communities, the policy continues to represent a difficult trade-off between environmental sustainability and immediate economic survival.

As the ban begins, attention is now focused on whether government assistance measures will be implemented effectively enough to ease hardship for tens of thousands of affected fishing families across Bhola and other coastal districts.
