Pop icon Britney Spears has voluntarily admitted herself to a rehabilitation centre for addiction treatment following a series of recent personal and legal developments, according to her representative.
The decision comes after an incident in March, when Spears was detained in California’s Ventura County for erratic driving while allegedly under the influence of alcohol. Law enforcement officials reportedly found traces of alcohol and controlled substances in her system following preliminary testing. She was briefly held before being released.
Her management team issued a strongly worded response to the incident, stating that her behaviour was “entirely unacceptable” and confirming that she is now taking legal and medical steps towards recovery. The statement also expressed hope that this marks the beginning of a sustained period of personal change and stability.
Spears, widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in modern pop music, has been largely absent from active music production in recent years. Her last studio album was released in 2016. Although she returned to the top of the charts in 2022 through the collaboration “Hold Me Closer” with Elton John, she announced in 2024 that she would not return to the music industry.
In late 2025, Spears reportedly sold the rights to her music catalogue for approximately 200 million US dollars to Primary Wave, marking a significant shift in the control of her artistic legacy.
Her 2023 memoir, The Woman in Me, achieved global commercial success and critical attention. A film adaptation of the book is currently in development, directed by Jon M. Chu, known for Wicked.
Spears’ personal life has also been the subject of widespread public discussion, particularly her long-standing legal conservatorship, which lasted from 2008 to 2021. During that 13-year period, she was placed under strict legal guardianship that governed major aspects of her personal, financial, and professional life. The arrangement generated extensive international debate before being formally terminated following prolonged legal proceedings.
