The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has apprehended four individuals for their alleged involvement in a fraudulent scheme. The suspects are accused of extorting money from Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and equivalent examinees by falsely promising to provide leaked question papers.
The arrests were the culmination of a series of coordinated raids conducted by the CTTC’s Online and Intelligence Analysis Division. On 20 April, the unit identified a suspicious Facebook page during routine social media surveillance. Following a digital analysis of the page, officers conducted a raid at approximately 20:30 in Tajpur, Ashulia, near the capital, resulting in the arrest of the first suspect, Sifat Ahmed.
Subsequent investigations and information provided by Sifat Ahmed led to the apprehension of three other accomplices across different districts. On 23 April, Mohammad Salman was arrested in Dhunat, Bogra, while Mezbaul Alam was taken into custody from the Dadanpur Malipara area in Nawabganj, Dinajpur. Based on further leads, the fourth suspect, Mohammad Mohiuzzaman, was arrested on 24 April in the Naogaon Union of Tarash, Sirajganj.
During a press conference held on Saturday afternoon at the DMP Media Centre on Minto Road, CTTC Joint Commissioner Munshi Shahabuddin briefed journalists on the operation. He confirmed that the syndicate had been operating for a significant period, targeting vulnerable students and their guardians.
The Joint Commissioner clarified that the “leaked” questions provided by the fraudsters bore no resemblance to the actual examination papers. The syndicate exploited the anxiety of candidates to illicitly obtain funds, using social media platforms as their primary tool for solicitation.
| Suspect Name | Date of Arrest | Location of Arrest |
| Sifat Ahmed | 20 April | Tajpur, Ashulia, Dhaka |
| Mohammad Salman | 23 April | Dhunat, Bogra |
| Mezbaul Alam | 23 April | Nawabganj, Dinajpur |
| Mohammad Mohiuzzaman | 24 April | Tarash, Sirajganj |
A formal case has been filed regarding these incidents. The four suspects are currently being interrogated under police remand to ascertain the full extent of their operations and to identify any other potential collaborators.
The CTTC has reiterated its warning to the public, advising students and parents to remain vigilant against such online scams. The authorities emphasised that the security measures surrounding the examination process are robust and that any claims of leaked question papers on social media are invariably fraudulent attempts to embezzle money. Monitoring of digital platforms remains active to prevent further instances of cyber-enabled examination fraud.
