With fewer than 50 days remaining before the commencement of the World Cup, footballing nations are focused on finalising squads and tactical preparations. However, reports emerging from Argentine and Spanish media have introduced a significant distraction: claims that Real Madrid are pursuing Argentina’s head coach, Lionel Scaloni.
According to journalist Manolo Lama, speaking on the popular Spanish radio programme El Partidazo de COPE, Real Madrid have already established direct contact with Scaloni. These claims were subsequently amplified by the prominent Spanish sports daily, Marca. Lama asserted that club president Florentino Pérez is personally spearheading the interest, drawing parallels to the “Lopetegui affair” of 2018.
Lama stated: “I can confirm that Real Madrid has contacted Scaloni. They are speaking with several coaches, but they are particularly interested in the Argentine manager. Pérez seems to be eyeing a repeat of the Lopetegui situation. He has spoken with Scaloni himself to gauge the possibilities before making a final decision.”
In 2018, Pérez caused a significant controversy by announcing Julen Lopetegui as Real Madrid’s next manager just days before the World Cup began. This led to Lopetegui’s immediate dismissal from the Spanish national team.
While TyC Sports in Argentina acknowledged the interest from Madrid, they also highlighted significant denials from Scaloni’s inner circle. Sources close to the 47-year-old coach maintain that no communication has taken place between him and the Real Madrid president.
Scaloni’s current contract with the Argentine Football Association (AFA) runs until the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup. Although AFA President Claudio ‘Chiqui’ Tapia has reportedly offered a contract extension, Scaloni has remained silent on his long-term future, insisting his immediate priority is the upcoming tournament.
The reported interest in Scaloni comes amidst a difficult period for Real Madrid. Under the leadership of Álvaro Arbeloa, who took charge of the first team in January, the club has struggled for form. Media outlets in Spain suggest that the club is set to finish a second consecutive season without a major trophy, making Arbeloa’s departure at the end of the current campaign highly likely.

Florentino Pérez is reportedly impressed by Scaloni’s ability to manage high-profile personalities, most notably Lionel Messi, while implementing modern tactical systems. Although Scaloni lacks experience as a head coach at the club level, his familiarity with Spanish football is extensive.
During his playing career, Scaloni represented Deportivo de La Coruña, Racing Santander, and Mallorca. He notably won the La Liga title with Deportivo in 2000. Furthermore, he maintains a permanent residence in El Toro, Mallorca, with his wife, former Spanish volleyball player Elisa Montero, and their children. This personal connection to Spain makes a potential move to the capital logistically straightforward.
Scaloni has previously remained elusive regarding a move to club football. In June last year, he admitted to receiving various proposals but stated: “I am not yet certain about taking a club role. I have the desire, but I don’t know if it will happen soon. Many offers come in, but their feasibility must be assessed.”
For now, Scaloni’s public position remains unchanged: his commitment lies solely with the Argentine national team through the World Cup cycle.
