Since joining the Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr in January 2023, the Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has sought to add a major domestic trophy to his extensive collection. Until recently, his sole silverware with the club was the Arab Club Champions Cup. However, following a decisive 2-0 victory over Al-Ahli, Al-Nassr have moved significantly closer to securing the Saudi Pro League title.
With this latest victory, Al-Nassr have consolidated their position at the summit of the table. They currently possess 79 points from 30 matches. Their closest rivals, Al-Hilal, sit in second place with 71 points from 29 matches. Although Al-Nassr have played one additional fixture, they maintain an eight-point cushion.
The following table outlines the current standing of the top two contenders:
| Club | Matches Played | Points | Matches Remaining |
| Al-Nassr | 30 | 79 | 4 |
| Al-Hilal | 29 | 71 | 5 |
Barring a dramatic collapse in the final four fixtures, Al-Nassr are widely considered the favourites to lift the trophy. Their current form is historically significant, as the club has secured 20 consecutive wins across all competitions, 16 of which have occurred within the league.
During the match against Al-Ahli, Ronaldo underscored his continued clinical nature. In the 76th minute, he converted a header from an inswinging corner delivered by João Félix. This strike marked his 970th career goal, leaving him only 30 goals shy of the unprecedented 1,000-goal milestone.
Since arriving at Al-Nassr, Ronaldo’s individual statistics have remained prolific. In 143 appearances, he has recorded 126 goals and 23 assists, contributing directly to 149 goals. Furthermore, he has scored 25 or more goals in three consecutive Saudi Pro League seasons, a level of consistency he previously maintained for nine seasons between 2009-10 and 2017-18.
The fixture was preceded by administrative friction. Al-Ahli had recently secured the AFC Champions League Elite title; however, Al-Nassr declined to provide a ‘guard of honour’ before kick-off, heightening tensions.
The match was further marred by disputes over officiating. Al-Ahli representatives expressed dissatisfaction, claiming they were denied two penalties for handball offences. As the match concluded, tempers flared between Kingsley Coman and Merih Demiral, with the friction extending to the supporters.
Post-match provocations included:
Al-Nassr’s Mohamed Simakan brandishing a club flag in front of Demiral before performing a lap of honour.
Merih Demiral holding up his AFC Champions League winner’s medal toward the Al-Nassr fans.
During interviews, Al-Ahli supporters reminded Ronaldo of their club’s status as two-time Asian champions. Ronaldo responded by gesturing that he holds five UEFA Champions League titles.
Despite the external controversies, the result leaves Al-Nassr in a commanding position to secure their first league title of the Ronaldo era.
