The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has officially announced a significant change to its World Cup squad following an injury to full-back Wesley. The 22-year-old Roma defender has been ruled out of the upcoming tournament due to a severe thigh injury sustained during a warm-up match. In his place, midfielder Éderson, who is set to join Manchester United, has been called up to the national team.
The injury occurred during Brazil’s final pre-World Cup friendly against Egypt on Sunday morning, which Brazil won 2-1. Just 15 minutes into the match, Wesley suffered the injury and left the pitch in tears. Subsequent medical examinations and scans confirmed the severity of the damage.
The CBF released an official statement detailing the diagnosis:
“An MRI scan has revealed an injury to the adductor muscle in Wesley’s left thigh. The CBF expresses its deep disappointment over this incident. Wesley is a highly esteemed player by everyone in the squad. He will always remain a part of this team as we pursue our objective of winning a sixth World Cup.”
The following table provides a factual overview of the two players involved in this squad transition:
| Metric / Detail | Wesley (Injured Player) | Éderson (Replacement Player) |
| Age | 22 years old | 26 years old |
| Playing Position | Full-back (Defender) | Midfielder |
| Club Affiliation | AS Roma | Atalanta BC (Italy) / Joining Manchester United |
| International Debut | Prior to the tournament | 2024 |
| National Caps | Regular squad member | 3 appearances |
The call-up came as a complete surprise to the 26-year-old Éderson, who has been playing for Italian club Atalanta since 2022 and has made three appearances for Brazil since his international debut in 2024. Although his name was included in Brazil’s provisional 55-man squad, he did not anticipate making the final roster.
At the time of the announcement, Éderson was on holiday with his family in Campo Grande, the capital of his home state, Mato Grosso do Sul. The previous evening, he had attended the wedding of his fellow footballer Rômulo, who plays for the Mexican club Tigres UANL.
Because he did not expect to be selected, Éderson had left his passport behind in Rio de Janeiro. Upon receiving the unexpected telephone call from the CBF on Sunday morning, he and his family had to make rapid arrangements to travel to the United States.
To join the national team in New Jersey, Éderson was required to board a flight from São Paulo. Friends assisted him by quickly couriering his passport from Rio de Janeiro to São Paulo. After spending Sunday morning responding to hundreds of congratulatory messages, Éderson departed Campo Grande for São Paulo at noon, ahead of his flight to the United States. He is scheduled to link up with the Brazilian squad this afternoon (Bangladesh Time) and participate in his first training session tonight.
Following his inclusion, Éderson shared his thoughts via a post on Instagram:
“God’s plans are always greater than my plans. I am proud and honoured to be part of the best national team in the world. Wesley, we are always by your side. Let us all move forward together.”
Brazil will officially commence their World Cup campaign next Sunday morning with an opening match against Morocco.
