A tragic accident occurred in Barguna Sadar Upazila, where a mother and her two-year-old son lost their lives after being electrocuted by a live electricity cable that had snapped during a storm and landed in a pond. The bodies of the deceased were recovered on Wednesday afternoon, 10 June, from the pond situated within the boundaries of their family residence in the Raybhog locality under Dhalua Union.
The victims have been formally identified as Nupur Akter, the wife of a local resident named Md. Miraj, and their young son, Shahadat. The incident has caused deep grief within the village, highlighting the hazards associated with overhead electrical distribution networks during extreme weather events. The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Barguna Sadar Police Station, Mohammad Abdul Alim, officially confirmed the details of the fatalities and the subsequent recovery operations.
According to reports provided by the police and relatives of the deceased, a severe storm accompanied by heavy rainfall swept across various areas of the Barguna district on Tuesday night, 9 June. During the storm, a tree inside the residential compound of Md. Miraj was uprooted by the strong winds. As the tree fell, it struck an overhead line belonging to the Palli Bidyut Samity, snapping the electrical cable and causing it to fall directly into the adjacent household pond.
Because the incident occurred overnight, none of the household members noticed that the live power line had snapped and plunged into the water. On Wednesday afternoon, Nupur Akter went to the pond, carrying her two-year-old son Shahadat with her. Upon entering or coming into contact with the electrified water, both mother and child were instantly electrocuted.
The accident remained undiscovered for several hours. At approximately 3:00 pm on Wednesday, technicians from the local electricity office arrived at the property to repair the damaged power line that had been reported after the storm. Whilst assessing the site and preparing to mend the broken wire, the electricity workers spotted the bodies of Nupur and Shahadat floating in the pond. They immediately informed the local police and the Fire Service and Civil Defence department.
Md. Saiful, the brother-in-law of the deceased Nupur Akter, described how the situation unfolded within the household. He stated that the power line had broken during the storm the previous night and remained submerged in the pond. He added that he had left the house in the morning to attend to his daily work, only to return later to discover that his brother’s wife and nephew had gone to the pond and met with a fatal electrical accident.
Another relative, Abdul Mannan, corroborated these accounts, noting that the snapped wire was hidden from view and nobody in the vicinity was aware of the lethal hazard in the water. He stated that the tragedy was only uncovered when the utility personnel arrived in the afternoon to carry out the necessary infrastructure repairs.
Following the emergency call, teams from the Barguna Sadar Police and the Fire Service personnel quickly arrived at the spot. Fire Service members entered the pond and successfully retrieved both bodies from the water.
Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Abdul Alim confirmed that the remains of Nupur Akter and her son Shahadat were subsequently transported to the Barguna General Hospital morgue for a mandatory post-mortem examination. The police administration has initiated an official inquiry into the incident, and further statutory legal processes are currently underway to conclude the matter.
