A burial in coastal Bhola turned into a tense confrontation after a dispute erupted among the children of a deceased man from his four marriages over property claims and the location of his burial, forcing police intervention to complete the rites under protection.
The incident occurred on Saturday (20 June) at the residence of the late Abdul Jalil Pandit in Ward No. 3 of Rasulpur Union under Char Fasson upazila. According to local accounts, Abdul Jalil Pandit died suddenly in the early hours of Friday after falling ill. News of his death quickly spread, drawing his children from four different marriages to the family home.
Almost immediately after gathering, disagreements surfaced regarding inheritance and financial entitlements. Members of the deceased’s children began demanding clarification over alleged assets and shares of property. Tensions escalated when the daughter of Jalil Pandit’s fourth wife, identified as Khadija Akter Smriti, asserted that her father had left no distributable estate and that no one else had any rightful claim.
The situation deteriorated into a first round of clashes among the opposing sides. In a separate development, Khokon, the former son-in-law of the fourth wife’s household, alleged that substantial money and gold jewellery—originally belonging to his earnings—had been kept in the custody of his former wife and father-in-law. He further claimed that these funds were later used to purchase residential houses and land. According to him, following his divorce in 2025 over allegations of an extramarital relationship, he demanded the recovery of those assets and warned that the burial should not proceed until his claims were addressed. Local residents eventually intervened and calmed the situation.
However, tensions resurfaced during the burial process. Children from the first three wives reportedly insisted that the deceased had expressed a wish to be buried in front of his residence. In contrast, Smriti and her group argued that the burial should take place at a designated cemetery outside the homestead. The disagreement escalated again into physical confrontation.
Police from Shashibhushan Police Station were subsequently informed and arrived at the scene to bring the situation under control. Authorities ensured security and supervised the burial, which was ultimately completed in front of the residential premises under police protection.
