In Memory: Rudra Mohammad Shahidullah

In the sky of Bengali poetry, Rudra Mohammad Shahidullah shines as a brilliant yet short-lived star. He expressed themes of love, rebellion, dreams, struggle, and the desire for human liberation in such powerful language that he is widely regarded as the “revolutionary romantic poet” of Bengali literature.

Long after his death, after a wait of thirty-three years, the Government of Bangladesh finally awarded him the Ekushey Padak 2024. This honour reaffirmed his outstanding literary contribution and his status as a poet of the people’s consciousness.

Rudra Mohammad Shahidullah was born on 16 October 1956 in the then Barishal district. However, his ancestral home was in Mithakhali village of Mongla upazila in Bagerhat district. From early childhood, he had a deep interest in literature and culture. He completed his Secondary School Certificate (SSC) in 1973 and Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) in 1975 from West End High School in Dhaka. Later, he obtained both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Bengali Language and Literature from the University of Dhaka.

During the 1980s, the movement of poetry recitation in public became highly popular, and Rudra was one of its leading figures. Poetry delivered in his voice moved not only literature enthusiasts but also the general public. His poems carried both the tenderness of love and the thunderous protest against injustice and oppression.

His immortal lines—
“From the field where the call of independence once came,
Today that same field hosts a market of drugs”
and
“Still today I smell the stench of corpses in the wind”
remain as powerful protests against the socio-political reality of Bangladesh and are still deeply relevant today.

The poet’s personal life was also widely discussed. In 1981, he married the renowned writer Taslima Nasrin out of love. However, their relationship ended in divorce in 1986. The tensions and complexities of his personal life had a profound influence on his poetry.

In his short life of only 35 years, he enriched Bengali literature with seven collections of poetry, one verse drama, several short stories, and more than fifty songs. His composed and written song “I am fine, stay well” remains evergreen in the world of Bengali music.

On 21 June 1991, he left this world forever. But death could not erase him. His poetry, songs, and spirit of resistance continue to inspire new generations, teaching them to stand tall against injustice.

In his memory, the Rudra Memorial Council has been established in his birthplace Mithakhali, Mongla, which continues to preserve and promote his literary legacy for future generations.

On his death anniversary today, we remember with deep respect the rebellious poet who turned love into the language of struggle and gave protest the beauty of poetry.

Tribute to poet Rudra Mohammad Shahidullah.

“Human debts to human beings are never repaid;
yet your poetry still keeps our conscience awake.”
