Mexico Launches Lottery to Support Migrants in the U.S.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Friday unveiled a national lottery aimed at raising funds to support Mexican migrants affected by US President Donald Trump’s renewed immigration crackdown.

There are nearly 12 million Mexicans living in the United States, where Trump has implemented stringent anti-immigration policies since his return to the White House in January.

A Gesture of Solidarity

“This lottery is dedicated to our migrant brothers and sisters,” declared Sheinbaum during her regular morning press briefing.
She reiterated her government’s commitment to providing comprehensive consular support to all Mexicans facing legal and humanitarian challenges due to current US immigration enforcement.

The initiative is not only symbolic but also financially significant. The lottery tickets are adorned with powerful national imagery:
a heart surrounded by ears of corn and agave plants, accompanied by the phrase:

“Mexico with an M for migrant.”

Voluntary Returns on the Rise

Earlier in the week, Sheinbaum revealed that nearly 75,000 Mexicans had opted to voluntarily return home from the United States since Trump began his second term.

She has voiced sharp criticism of recent US immigration raids, particularly in Los Angeles, a city with a substantial Mexican population. The Mexican government has condemned these operations as excessively harsh and destabilising for migrant communities.

This lottery represents both a symbolic and practical measure by the Sheinbaum administration to support its nationals abroad during a time of rising immigration tensions.
