Just 45 Seconds! The Cruel Story of Messi’s Debut Red Card
For any athlete, the debut moment is the most eagerly awaited and cherished event of their career. It is something for which they prepare for years, carrying dreams and excitement in their eyes. Yet for the Argentine superstar Lionel Messi, the long-awaited debut turned out to be anything but ordinary—unexpected, dramatic, and, in many ways, cruel.
On 17 August 2005, exactly two decades ago, at the Puskás Arena in Budapest, a friendly match against Hungary marked the beginning of Lionel Messi’s journey in Argentina’s senior shirt. On paper, it was nothing more than a friendly fixture, a stage set for a dream start to the young forward’s career. Reality, however, told a far harsher story.
In the 63rd minute of the second half, Argentina’s then coach José Pékerman substituted Lisandro López and handed the number 18 shirt to 18-year-old Lionel Messi. The youngster stepped onto the pitch quietly, almost as if trying to hide his nervous excitement.
But that dream run barely lasted. Within just 45 seconds, while attempting to control his first ball, Messi was tugged back by Hungarian defender Vilmos Vanczák. In an effort to shrug him off, Messi’s hand brushed against the defender. Vanczák went down theatrically, convincing the referee of a foul.
German referee Markus Merk, wasting no time, reached for his pocket and showed Messi a straight red card. The prodigy’s international career had begun not with a goal or a dazzling run, but with a dismissal.
In an interview with TyC Sports in 2019, Messi recalled that painful evening: “I thought I would never be called up again. I came on, and immediately they sent me off. I felt terrible.”
At that moment, Messi was not only afraid of losing his place in the senior national side but also deeply burdened by the weight of an entire nation’s expectations. He had already been a sensation at youth level, playing a pivotal role under Francisco Ferraro as Argentina won the FIFA Under-20 World Cup earlier that summer. Messi had been crowned both Best Player and Top Scorer of the tournament.
Interestingly, Messi’s current World Cup-winning coach, Lionel Scaloni, was on the pitch that day as a team-mate, wearing the number 4 shirt. He was the first to protest against the controversial decision, arguing persistently with the referee in an attempt to overturn it. Despite his efforts, the red card stood, sealing Messi’s debut in unforgettable misery.
Despite the crushing disappointment of that night in Budapest, Messi did not allow the setback to define him. Instead, it became the opening chapter of one of football’s greatest stories.
Over the next two decades, Lionel Messi grew to become not only Argentina’s greatest ever player but also one of the most iconic figures in the history of the sport. He went on to deliver what his country had long yearned for—Copa América glory and the ultimate prize, the FIFA World Cup.
