Questions have been raised regarding the role of law enforcement agencies, particularly following the attack on Gono Adhikar Parishad president Nurul Haq Nur, as well as the overall security situation. There has been widespread criticism from various quarters. In light of this, senior officers from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have convened an emergency meeting.
On Saturday (30th August), DMP Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) S. N. Mohammad Nazrul Islam confirmed this development.
He stated that the meeting is being held due to the serious nature of the issue. When asked about the identification of the individual in civilian clothes who assaulted student leader Samrat, or whether he had been arrested, he declined to comment, adding, “The matter is still under investigation.”
Meanwhile, during the baton charge on Gono Adhikar Parishad members, a man in a red polo shirt was seen violently beating student leader Samrat. Although he claimed to be a police officer at the time, DMP has yet to confirm his identity.
On Friday night, a violent clash took place in Bijoynagar, where the National Party (Jatiya Party) leaders and activists clashed with Gono Adhikar Parishad members. During the confrontation, several leaders and activists from Gono Adhikar Parishad, including Nurul Haq Nur, were severely injured by law enforcement forces. Nur was later rescued and initially taken to Islami Bank Hospital. After medical consultation, he was transferred to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 11 p.m.
Brigadier General Mohammad Asaduzzaman, Director of DMCH, confirmed that Nur’s nose bone had been fractured in the attack. He also sustained an injury above his eye and had slight bleeding in the head.
He added, “When he was brought to the hospital in the evening, the casualty department doctors initially attended to him. He was later moved to the One-Stop Emergency Centre (OSEC) and transferred to the ICU the same night.”
“A medical board was formed that night, comprising doctors from five departments. Based on their advice, treatment is ongoing. Nur’s condition is stable, but we cannot declare him out of danger until 48 hours have passed. The bleeding in his brain is expected to improve with medication,” he said.
