Alejandro Garnacho, once hailed as one of football’s most luminous prospects, currently faces a defining crossroads in his professional career. Having made a sensational debut for Manchester United in April 2022 at the age of 17, the Argentine winger is now grappling with a significant decline in form and public standing. Following Chelsea’s recent defeat to his former club at Old Trafford, the scrutiny surrounding the 21-year-old has reached a fever pitch.
Garnacho’s journey began with immense promise; Manchester United legend Paul Scholes once described him as an “artist,” and many observers drew comparisons to a young Cristiano Ronaldo. Despite his vocal admiration for Ronaldo over Lionel Messi, Garnacho successfully integrated into the Argentine national setup, earning eight caps and participating in the 2024 Copa América winning squad.
However, his trajectory altered significantly in 2025 when he transferred from Manchester United to Chelsea. This move followed a reported tactical dispute with United’s former manager, Ruben Amorim. While Amorim publicly praised Garnacho’s work ethic, he struggled to find a natural role for the player in his system, often deploying the natural winger as a “Number 10.” Garnacho later admitted that being sidelined and played out of position contributed to his decision to leave, acknowledging he made “wrong decisions” during that period.
Garnacho’s inaugural seasons at Stamford Bridge have been underwhelming. His lack of clinical finishing and playmaking impact has coincided with a difficult period for Chelsea.

The recent match at Old Trafford served as a stark reminder of his fallen status. Substituted after an ineffective performance, Garnacho was subjected to jeers from the crowd. Post-match footage showed the winger standing isolated as Manchester United players ignored him in the tunnel.
The situation intensified on social media when United defender Luke Shaw posted a photograph of himself tackling Garnacho, captioned “Big win.” The post drew mocking interactions from former teammates, including United captain Bruno Fernandes, who shared a GIF with the text “That is a complete insult,” and Alex Telles, who responded with fire emojis.
While Garnacho remains committed to Argentina—stating that the opportunity to play alongside Lionel Messi was “impossible to turn down”—his place in Lionel Scaloni’s squad is in jeopardy. Having not featured for the national team since November 2024, reports suggest he has been excluded from the preliminary squad for the upcoming World Cup.
Reflecting on his departure from Manchester, Garnacho expressed a mix of nostalgia and pragmatism: “I loved the club… but sometimes a change is needed for the next step in life.” Whether that step will lead him to the world’s biggest stage in 2026 remains a matter of performance rather than potential.
