Behind the glamour of the film industry, there are many untold stories. One such surprising revelation came from Main Hoon Na director Farah Khan, who opened up about an interesting twist in casting the role opposite Shah Rukh Khan in the film. Amrita Rao, who later became a favourite of the audience in that role, wasn’t the first choice. In fact, Ayesha Takia was initially finalised for the part. However, just two weeks before the shoot was set to begin, Ayesha unexpectedly pulled out of the film.
Released in 2004, Main Hoon Na marked a turning point not only in Shah Rukh Khan's career but also for Farah Khan, who made her directorial debut with the film. Recently, Farah shared some of her memories from that time during a vlog at Amrita Rao's house.
She recalled, “We had everything set: the Darjeeling location was booked, costumes were ready, and we were all set to begin shooting. But then, just two weeks before the shoot, I found out that Ayesha Takia would no longer be a part of the film.”
Farah explained that at the time, Ayesha was busy with Imtiaz Ali’s project and couldn’t commit to the film due to scheduling conflicts.
To manage the situation, Shah Rukh Khan’s wife and the film's co-producer, Gauri Khan, stepped in and advised Farah to meet Amrita Rao. Initially hesitant, Farah was convinced after Amrita’s audition.
Farah said, “She came in simple clothes, and I didn’t feel she suited the character at first. But when she performed the crying scene in front of the camera, everything changed! Her eyes had the intensity I was looking for.”
In the end, Amrita Rao played the role in Main Hoon Na, and her performance was widely praised by both audiences and critics. The film's success solidified Farah Khan’s place in Bollywood as a director, while Amrita also gained immense recognition for her acting skills.
This behind-the-scenes story is yet another example of how chance and a timely piece of advice can alter the course of a career in the film industry.
