Dhaka, 19 August 2026: Bangladesh’s growing trade, investment and financial links with the global economy continue to drive demand for foreign currencies. Exchange rates therefore remain an important reference for importers, exporters, remittance recipients, travellers and businesses engaged in international transactions.
The indicative exchange rates of the Bangladeshi taka against selected foreign currencies for Wednesday, 19 August 2026, show notable differences in the value of major international currencies. According to data from Bangladesh Bank, the US dollar is being exchanged at Tk 121.90, while the euro stands at Tk 141.17 and the British pound at Tk 165.01.
Among the other major currencies, the Australian dollar is valued at Tk 86.43 and the Canadian dollar at Tk 87.76. The Singapore dollar stands at Tk 95.39, while the Chinese yuan renminbi is quoted at Tk 18.08. In South Asia, the Indian rupee is valued at Tk 1.27 and the Sri Lankan rupee at Tk 2.72.
| Currency | Exchange rate in Bangladeshi taka |
|---|---|
| US dollar | Tk 121.90 |
| Euro | Tk 141.17 |
| British pound | Tk 165.01 |
| Australian dollar | Tk 86.43 |
| Japanese yen | Tk 0.76 |
| Canadian dollar | Tk 87.76 |
| Swedish krona | Tk 12.79 |
| Singapore dollar | Tk 95.39 |
| Chinese yuan renminbi | Tk 18.08 |
| Indian rupee | Tk 1.27 |
| Sri Lankan rupee | Tk 2.72 |
The exchange rate is particularly significant for Bangladesh because the country relies heavily on international trade for essential imports, industrial raw materials, machinery, fuel and consumer goods. Changes in the value of the taka against major currencies can influence import costs, business expenses and, in some cases, domestic prices.
Foreign exchange movements also have a direct bearing on overseas remittances. Millions of Bangladeshis working abroad regularly send foreign currency to their families, making remittance inflows an important source of foreign exchange for the country. A stronger foreign currency can increase the taka value received by beneficiaries, although the actual amount paid may vary according to the rate applied by individual banks and financial service providers.
Exchange rates also matter when measuring economic indicators in an international context. Gross domestic product, per-capita income and several other economic comparisons are commonly converted into internationally recognised currencies to facilitate comparisons between countries.
The rates cited for 19 August are subject to change. Actual buying and selling rates may differ between banks, authorised dealers and other financial institutions depending on market conditions, transaction type and applicable charges.
