The Bangladesh women’s football team finds itself caught between hope and disappointment. Memories of their humbling defeat against North Korea still linger, yet the players are buoyed by the prospect of redemption. Riding this wave of optimism, the squad journeyed across Australia—from Sydney to Perth—preparing for their decisive third and final group match against Uzbekistan in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup. Kick-off in Perth is scheduled for 3:00 PM Bangladesh Standard Time.
Though Sydney is five hours ahead of Bangladesh, Perth is only two hours ahead. After nearly five hours in the air, the team arrived and immediately undertook light stretching exercises in Kings Park adjacent to their hotel. According to the team’s physiotherapist, Ishnad Zaman, the players are in good physical and mental shape. “The match against China was extremely demanding physically, but thankfully, all players are relatively healthy. There are minor aches and strains, which we can manage,” he said. Notably, Bangladesh had travelled to Australia without a physiotherapist, and Zaman joined the team upon arrival in Sydney.
The 12-team tournament sees the winners and runners-up of each group advance directly to the quarter-finals, while the best two third-placed teams across the three groups fill the remaining slots. In Group B, nine-time champions China and three-time champions North Korea have already secured their quarter-final places with two wins each. Bangladesh and Uzbekistan have lost both matches, leaving Uzbekistan in third place on a goal difference of -6 and Bangladesh fourth at -7.
| Team | Matches Played | Wins | Losses | Points | Goal Difference |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| China | 2 | 2 | 0 | 6 | +8 |
| North Korea | 2 | 2 | 0 | 6 | +3 |
| Uzbekistan | 2 | 0 | 2 | 0 | -6 |
| Bangladesh | 2 | 0 | 2 | 0 | -7 |
In Group A, hosts Australia and South Korea have already qualified, while the Philippines and Iran remain on zero points. A draw between Iran and the Philippines in Gold Coast, followed by a Bangladesh victory over Uzbekistan, would see the South Asian side advance to the quarter-finals. In Group C, Japan tops the table, but India suffered an 11-0 defeat to Japan, jeopardising their campaign despite a final match against Chinese Taipei on 10 March. This opens a possibility for a third-placed team to progress.
Uzbekistan has demonstrated superior physical strength in its first two matches, though Bangladesh can compete in pace and skill. FIFA rankings show Uzbekistan at 49th, far above Bangladesh’s 112th, yet on-field differences may not be as stark. Uzbekistan will host the 2029 Women’s Asian Cup and has twice won the CAFA regional tournament. They have participated in five Women’s Asian Cups, exiting at the group stage each time.
Bangladesh, making their tournament debut, stunned Myanmar last year—who were 55 places higher in the rankings—to secure their spot. That victory, combined with their spirited fight against China, continues to serve as a powerful source of motivation for the team.
