The Brisbane Test continues to enthral cricket fans as England set Australia an almost negligible target of just 65 runs in the fourth Test. The day was defined by patience and resilience, with no wickets falling in the opening session—a unique occurrence in this series and a rarity in Test cricket.
Ben Stokes and Will Jacks provided England with a brief lifeline, compiling a seventh-wicket partnership of 96 runs over 220 balls. Their disciplined approach frustrated the Australian bowlers until Michael Neser’s delivery induced a crucial edge from Jacks, taken superbly by Steve Smith at slip. Jacks’ 41-run innings stood out amidst England’s overall struggle.
Stokes, well-set at the crease, faced Australia’s determined attack alongside lower-order batsmen. However, Alex Carey’s sharp wicketkeeping produced another spectacular moment. Taking a short-leg catch off Neser’s fast deliveries, Carey demonstrated reflexes and anticipation at the highest level. He continued to excel throughout the match, standing up to deliveries from both Scott Boland and Neser, ensuring no edge or bounce went unpunished.
England’s innings, chasing a deficit of 177 runs, saw solid starts from openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley, who added 48 runs in 7.4 overs. However, the middle order collapsed, losing six wickets for just 38 runs. Stokes and Jacks’ partnership provided some stability, but once Jacks was dismissed at 224 in the 70th over, the remaining wickets fell rapidly. England lost their last four wickets for just 17 runs.
With a target of 65, Australia is now poised for a straightforward chase, highlighting England’s struggles in their second innings. Despite the collapse, the match featured moments of individual brilliance, particularly Stokes’ resilience and Carey’s exceptional wicketkeeping. Michael Neser’s five-wicket haul added further pressure on the visiting side.
The Brisbane Test has once again proved why the Gabba is renowned as one of the most challenging venues in world cricket, where patience, skill, and fielding brilliance combine to produce memorable contests. Australia is well on course to extend their series lead, but England’s fight in the lower order, particularly from Stokes and Jacks, provided a glimpse of hope and displayed the character required in high-pressure Test cricket.
