Dark Clouds Over the BPL

Published: 16 Nov 2025, 02:08 am

Uncertainty continues to loom over the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), with doubts about its smooth conduct showing no signs of abating. Despite changes in the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) following recent elections, the challenge of overcoming past organisational and financial failures remains daunting. The league’s most pressing issue this season is the financial capability of franchise owners to pay players and associated staff. Several franchises have already struggled to meet their obligations, casting a shadow over the tournament.

Compounding these concerns are reports of attempts by unscrupulous elements with a history of involvement in match-fixing to infiltrate at least two teams. In the previous season, the Rajshahi franchise was the centre of similar controversies. Sources within the BPL have confirmed that the board is monitoring the situation closely, insisting that no individuals involved in unethical practices will be allowed entry.

Financially, franchisees were required to provide a bank guarantee of 100 million taka within the deadline for Expression of Interest (EOI) to secure ownership. While the five franchises were formally awarded ownership on 5 November, two teams, notably Chattogram and Sylhet, failed to meet the guarantee deadline of 13 November. The board subsequently extended the deadline to 18 November, but questions remain over the franchises’ ability to comply.

With the player auction now scheduled for 23 November instead of 17 November, franchises have only seven days to rectify the situation. Any failure could threaten the credibility of the entire tournament. Beyond finances, the BCB must also tackle the looming threat of match-fixing with strict oversight to safeguard the BPL’s long-term integrity and brand value. This dual challenge of financial stability and ethical governance will ultimately determine whether the BPL can weather these stormy clouds.
