Dropped from Two Films, Yet Deepika Refuses to Work Beyond Eight Hours

Deepika Padukone has recently been dropped from two major projects, first from Spirit and then from Kalki 2898. Following her exit from the first film, debate erupted over working hours in the film industry. When she was later removed from the Kalki sequel, the discussion intensified and continues to be a topic of conversation.

In a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar India, Deepika explained why she has been vocal about limiting her workday to eight hours. Despite being excluded from back-to-back projects, she stood her ground, advocating not only for herself but urging the industry as a whole to prioritise the well-being of artists.

“Maternity has changed everything for me,” Deepika stated. “They say you will only understand when you become a mother – and that is very true. I have far greater respect for mothers now. You might think you can manage work and motherhood simultaneously, but in reality, it is incredibly challenging. New mothers need far more support when returning to work.”

When asked why actors should restrict themselves to eight-hour days, she clarified, “We have normalised overworking in our industry. We often mistake extreme exhaustion for dedication. Physically and mentally, eight hours of work is sufficient. Only when you are well can you give your best. No one can deliver meaningful work when exhausted.”

She added, “In my own office, I work eight-hour days from Monday to Friday. Both parenting and professional commitments deserve equal respect. Bringing children into the workplace should also be normalised in India.”

After giving birth to her second child, Duva, in September 2024, Deepika took some time away from acting. Although being dropped from two films posed challenges, she is currently occupied with Shah Rukh Khan’s King and will also appear opposite Allu Arjun in Atlee Kumar’s AA22 x A6.
