Drug Addict Jailed for Attack on Family

A chilling episode of domestic violence and substance abuse in Bogra’s Dhunat Upazila has culminated in a custodial sentence for a local youth. On Monday, 23 February, a mobile court sentenced 23-year-old Raju Mia to nine months of simple imprisonment following a series of violent outbursts directed at his own father and infant son.

A Pattern of Domestic Terror

The convict, a resident of Banshpata village in the Gopalnagar Union, had reportedly been spiralling into a severe narcotics addiction for some time. According to local sources and officials from the Upazila Land Office, Raju Mia frequently demanded money from his father, Belal Hossain, to fund his drug habit.

When his demands were not met, the situation would turn volatile. Raju was accused of:

Physical Assault: Repeatedly beating his father.

Attempted Homicide: Threatening the life of his own infant child.

Property Damage: Methodically destroying household furniture and belongings in fits of rage.

The domestic situation became so harrowing that Raju’s wife fled to her parental home six months ago, leaving her nursing child behind to escape her husband's escalating brutality.

Judicial Intervention

Faced with an untenable situation, Belal Hossain sought help from the authorities, filing written complaints with the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and various law enforcement agencies. Acting on this intelligence, a mobile court led by the Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate, Khairuzzaman, conducted a targeted raid on Monday afternoon.

Raju was apprehended at his residence while in the act of consuming Yaba (a potent methamphetamine stimulant). The Magistrate summarily convicted him under the Narcotics Control Act.

A Call for Social Vigilance

Following the sentencing, Raju Mia was transported to the Bogra District Jail to serve his term. Magistrate Khairuzzaman emphasised that such operations are vital to curb the "menace of narcotics" that tears apart the fabric of rural families. He urged citizens from all walks of life to cooperate with law enforcement to eradicate drug abuse and illegal gambling from the community.

The case highlights the devastating secondary effects of the Yaba epidemic in Bangladesh, where the financial burden of addiction often leads to extreme domestic cruelty and the breakdown of the traditional family structure.
