A profound sense of grief has enveloped a community in Lakshmipur after a madrasa teacher, his wife, and their two children were laid to rest side by side following a devastating road accident that claimed all four lives while they were travelling back to Dhaka after the Eid holidays.
The deceased—Mufti Abdul Momin, his wife Jhorna Begum (40), their son Saif (7), and daughter Labiba (18)—were buried on Friday afternoon after funeral prayers held following Jumu’ah. The burial took place at a family graveyard in Titarkandi village under Charshahi Union in Lakshmipur Sadar upazila, located at the home of Momin’s in-laws.
The funeral prayer (janaza) was conducted at the Bashahaji Patwari Bari Jame Mosque premises, drawing a large gathering of relatives, neighbours, and local residents who came to pay their final respects. The prayer was led by Maulana Faisal Ahmad, Central Organising Secretary of Khelafat Majlis, who was also the brother-in-law of the deceased.
Following the janaza, the four family members were buried in adjacent graves—a deeply symbolic and emotional gesture reflecting their close bond in life and death. Witnesses described the atmosphere as sombre, with mourners overcome by grief at the loss of an entire family in a single tragic incident.
Mufti Abdul Momin was a respected madrasa teacher based in Mohammadpur, Dhaka, where he worked for several years. Originally from Senbagh upazila in Noakhali district, he was the son of the late Yunus Munshi of Chatarpaiya Union.
Due to professional commitments, Momin spent most of his time in the capital. However, during Eid holidays, he would travel with his family to stay at his in-laws’ residence in Lakshmipur, as he did not yet own property in his native village. Family members revealed that he had been planning to purchase land in his hometown and eventually settle there.
The fatal incident occurred on Thursday evening along the Dhaka–Chattogram highway in the Kalakachua area of Cumilla district. According to reports, a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a private car resulted in the immediate deaths of all four members of Momin’s family.
The driver of the private car, identified as Jamal Hossain (52), a resident of Barishal, also lost his life in the crash.

Speaking after the burial, Maulana Faisal Ahmad expressed deep sorrow at the sudden and tragic loss of his sister, brother-in-law, and their children. “They have all been laid to rest side by side. It is an unimaginable loss for our family,” he said.
Relatives described Momin as a devoted family man and a dedicated educator, whose life revolved around his profession and his children’s upbringing. His plans to secure a permanent home in his native village remained unfulfilled, adding to the poignancy of the tragedy.
Local residents also expressed shock, noting that the deaths had left a lasting emotional impact on the community. Many highlighted the dangers of highway travel, particularly during peak holiday seasons such as Eid, when traffic volume increases significantly.
The accident once again underscores ongoing concerns regarding road safety on Bangladesh’s major highways, especially the Dhaka–Chattogram corridor, which is one of the busiest and most accident-prone routes in the country. Head-on collisions involving buses and smaller vehicles remain a recurring cause of fatalities.
Authorities have yet to release detailed findings regarding the cause of the crash, though investigations are expected to examine factors such as vehicle speed, road conditions, and driver conduct.
While road accidents are often reported in numbers, the loss of an entire family has deeply resonated with many, serving as a stark reminder of the human cost behind such incidents. The image of four graves aligned side by side stands as a powerful symbol of a life abruptly cut short.
As the community mourns, prayers continue for the departed, and calls grow louder for improved road safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
