Model Remanded After Wreath-Laying Incident at Savar National Memorial Site

A Dhaka court has ordered the remand of a model and social media personality following her arrest at the National Martyrs' Memorial, where she reportedly laid a wreath on behalf of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during Independence Day commemorations.

The accused, Mosammat Simu Akter Brishti—popularly known as “Misti Subas”—has been placed on a two-day police remand for questioning. In the same case, co-accused Rafiqul Islam, also known as Durjoy, has been granted a three-day remand.

Court proceedings and legal framework

The remand order was issued on Friday by Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Tajul Islam Sohag after police presented the accused before the court. Investigators had initially sought five days’ remand for each individual, arguing that extended custodial interrogation was necessary to determine the motives and organisational links behind the .

Defence lawyer Advocate Md Khair Uddin Sikdar contested the remand request and filed a bail petition, maintaining that the did not warrant such measures. However, the court rejected the bail plea and approved a shorter remand period, allowing investigators limited সময় to question the accused.

Arrest during Independence Day observance

The arrests took place on 26 March, Bangladesh’s Independence Day, when large numbers of people gather at the Savar memorial to pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives during the Liberation War. According to police, the accused were part of a group attempting to conduct unauthorised political within the memorial premises.

Law enforcement officials stated that the group’s activities were deemed disruptive and potentially capable of creating during a nationally significant day, prompting immediate intervention.

Allegations and case details

According to the formal case statement, around 22 to 25 individuals allegedly associated with the Bangladesh Awami League gathered near the central altar of the memorial. They were reportedly carrying placards featuring images of Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman while chanting political slogans.
