The Bangladesh Coastguard has intercepted a fishing trawler off the coast of Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar, rescuing 50 individuals, including women and children, who were being trafficked to Malaysia by sea. Nine suspected human traffickers were apprehended during the maritime operation.
The details of the interception were disclosed on Saturday afternoon during a press briefing held at the Teknaf Coastguard Station office by the Station Incharge, Lieutenant Commander Md. Muttakin Siddique. According to the official statement, the group of 50 rescued victims comprised 39 Bangladeshi nationals and 11 Rohingya individuals.
Lieutenant Commander Siddique explained that the operation commenced on Friday evening after the Coastguard received intelligence indicating that a trawler carrying several individuals was attempting an illegal journey to Malaysia via the Bay of Bengal coastline in Teknaf. In response to this information, Coastguard personnel immediately increased surveillance across all strategic maritime exit points along the Teknaf coast.
During the patrol, officers spotted a suspicious fishing trawler in the territorial waters off the coast of Baharchhara. When the Coastguard issued signals ordering the vessel to stop, the traffickers attempted to evade capture by accelerating the trawler. Following a high-speed maritime pursuit, Coastguard personnel successfully intercepted and boarded the vessel. A thorough search of the trawler revealed the 50 victims confined on board, leading to the immediate arrest of the nine crew members managing the illicit transport.
The nine detained individuals have been identified as Md. Russel, Md. Amir Uddin, Md. Shahabuddin, Md. Yunus, Md. Jasim, Md. Rafiq, Md. Abdur Razzak, Md. Ismail, and Md. Suruj Zaman. Lieutenant Commander Siddique confirmed that all nine suspects have been handed over to the Teknaf Model Police Station, where formal criminal cases have been registered against them under the relevant human trafficking prevention laws.
Providing further details regarding the operations of the organized criminal network, Siddique noted that the syndicate systematically lures vulnerable Bangladeshi and Rohingya citizens to the Teknaf coastal belt by promising well-paid employment and improved living conditions abroad. Instead, the victims are frequently held captive in hidden shelters along the coast, where they are subjected to physical abuse to extort ransom from their families.
The table below presents the statistical distribution of the rescued victims and the detained suspects involved in the maritime operation:
| Category of Individuals | National / Group Identity | Total Count | Legal Status / Destination |
