Police in Nakla Upazila, Sherpur District, have taken five leaders and activists affiliated with the Bangladesh Awami League and its associate bodies into custody following a series of evening raids across various locations in the upazila.
Those apprehended during the operation include Mokhlesur Rahman (65), President of the Chandrakona Union Awami League; Habibur Rahman (57), General Secretary of Ward 1 Awami League under Nakla Municipality; Hamidul Islam (48), Vice-President of Ward 4 Gouradwar Union Awami Jubo League; Naeem Parvez (32), former Deputy Social Services Secretary of the Dhaka University Chhatra League; and Sultan Miah (50), an activist from the Ganapaddi Union Awami League.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nakla Police Station, Ripon Chandra Gop, confirmed the arrests and stated that law enforcement agencies conducted targeted operations across the region to ensure public order. According to police officials, the measures were implemented to prevent potential disruptions or unlawful gatherings associated with political activities in Nakla Upazila. All five detained individuals were produced before the local court for further judicial proceedings.
The arrests have drawn strong criticism from local party representatives. Abdur Rashid Sarkar, Publicity and Publication Secretary of the Nakla Upazila Awami League, alleged that the detentions were politically motivated and conducted without valid warrants or active cases against the individuals. He contended that the operation was specifically designed to impede the party’s scheduled observances and gatherings.
This law enforcement crackdown takes place amidst an environment of heightened security and strict surveillance across the nation. Police administrations in various districts regularly deploy preventive measures, including security patrols and targeted raids, to mitigate risks of civil unrest and maintain public safety during key national events and sensitive political observances. Authorities reiterated that law enforcement agency operations remain focused entirely on maintaining law and order, ensuring community safety, and preventing any potential breaches of the peace within the upazila.
