A former Union Parishad (UP) member in Narsingdi’s Raipur upazila has been brutally murdered, with local authorities suspecting foul play linked to local disputes. On Thursday morning, residents of Dharabhanga in Nawabganj, Brahmanbaria, spotted a body floating in the river near MP Tila. Police were promptly alerted and recovered the body for investigation.

The deceased has been identified as Amir Hossain, aged 45. He previously served as a UP member representing Ward 3 of Banshgari Union Parishad. Local law enforcement reports that Amir faced five separate criminal cases filed at Raipur Police Station, although the motives behind his killing remain unclear. Family members suspect that territorial disputes in the Banshgari char areas or longstanding personal enmity may have led to his death.

Sunil Chandra Sridhar, Officer-in-Charge of the Salimganj Police Camp, told reporters that the victim sustained four distinct blows to the head and multiple injuries to both legs, indicative of a violent assault.

According to the family, Amir Hossain was travelling by boat from Banshgari to his ancestral home in nearby Charmadhua on the night prior to his death. During the journey, he was allegedly forced onto another boat by a group of assailants. He was then attacked with knives and blunt instruments before being thrown into the river. The following morning, local residents discovered the body drifting near Dharabhanga, Nawabganj, and promptly pulled it ashore. Police were notified and conducted a preliminary inspection, preparing a formal inquest before transferring the body to the station.

Amir Hossain’s elder brother, Bakul Mia, expressed the family’s grief and frustration: “We do not know who committed this crime. We have heard that he was forcibly taken from the boat and killed on the way to Charmadhua. We demand justice for Amir.”

Nawabganj Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Rafiqul Islam, explained, “Our initial assessment suggests that the body was dumped in the river after the attack and floated downstream into our jurisdiction. Several acquaintances of the deceased have identified the body at the station. Arrangements are underway to send the body to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination.”
