The newly appointed Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), Md. Aminul Islam, has assured that internal disputes within the tribunal will not impede its judicial proceedings. Speaking to reporters at the tribunal’s office on Thursday morning, he emphasised that there is no risk of the tribunal’s work coming to a halt.
This statement comes amid recent allegations raised by Prosecutor B. M. Sultan Mahmud against the outgoing Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam and Prosecutor Gazi Monawer Hossain Tamim. The accusations include corruption and irregularities in judicial processes, sparking public attention and concern about the tribunal’s operational stability.
In addition, issues surrounding Mahmud himself surfaced earlier this year, when, in January, there were reports of his potential removal. Allegations included breach of discipline and conduct rules, physical assault on security personnel, and attempts by Tajul Islam to influence legal advisors in the removal process.
Responding to journalists’ questions about the impact of these controversies, Aminul Islam remarked, “Just as families experience disputes without ceasing to function, the tribunal will continue its work despite any internal disagreements. Everyone here is part of a single professional family.” He underscored that personal differences or criticism will not affect the judicial process.
The Chief Prosecutor further stressed his commitment to impartiality, stating, “I have never been trained to compromise on justice, nor will I allow compromises under my supervision.” He assured that no innocent person will suffer harassment and that no perpetrator will evade justice.
To contextualise recent developments, the following table summarises the key events and allegations:
| Date | Event | Allegations / Issues | Individuals Involved |
|---|---|---|---|
| January 2026 | Removal consideration | Breach of conduct, assault on security personnel, influence on legal advisors | B. M. Sultan Mahmud, Mohammad Tajul Islam |
| February 2026 | Corruption complaints | Irregularities in judicial process | Mohammad Tajul Islam, Gazi Monawer Hossain Tamim |
| February 2026 | Statement to media | Assurance of uninterrupted tribunal work | Md. Aminul Islam |
Aminul Islam’s remarks aim to reinforce confidence in the tribunal’s ongoing operations, highlighting that justice will proceed unaffected by internal controversies. Tribunal officials have affirmed that all ongoing trials and investigations will continue according to schedule, maintaining transparency and integrity in the judicial process.
Observers note that the Chief Prosecutor’s firm stance sends a clear signal that the tribunal will uphold the rule of law, ensuring accountability for offenders while safeguarding the rights of the innocent. With this assurance, stakeholders and the public are encouraged to expect uninterrupted judicial activity and timely resolution of cases.
The tribunal’s commitment to impartiality and diligence remains paramount, demonstrating resilience in the face of administrative challenges and internal disputes.
