Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is set to take residence at the state guesthouse Jamuna in Dhaka, marking a significant shift in the government’s official accommodation arrangements. Situated on Hair Road, the Jamuna estate has been selected as the Prime Minister’s official residence to ensure enhanced security and convenient access to the Secretariat. Meanwhile, the Department of Government Housing finalised the allocation of residences to newly appointed ministers and state ministers yesterday.

At present, Jamuna is occupied by the recently dissolved interim government’s chief adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus. He is scheduled to vacate the residence tomorrow, 27 February, according to the Department of Government Housing under the Ministry of Housing and Public Works.

Speaking to a leading daily, Chief Engineer Md. Khalekuzzaman Chowdhury stated, “The Prime Minister has expressed his intention to reside at Jamuna. The former chief adviser will vacate the property this month, and once minor renovations are completed, the Prime Minister will move in.”

Previously, during the interim government period, possible official residences for the new Prime Minister were considered in the National Parliament and Sher-e-Bangla Nagar areas. However, due to time constraints and logistical considerations, these locations were ultimately deemed unsuitable. Currently, the Prime Minister resides in his private home in Gulshan, commuting from there to the Secretariat on Abdul Gani Road and the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon.

The Ministry of Public Works has confirmed that the Prime Minister intends to host Ramadan Iftar gatherings and the upcoming Eid al-Fitr celebrations at Jamuna. Accordingly, renovation and refurbishment works are being expedited.

Jamuna occupies approximately 3.25 acres at 30 Hair Road. Adjacent properties at 24 and 25 Hair Road currently house senior officers of the former chief adviser’s security team. Once vacated, these properties will be reserved for the Prime Minister’s security personnel.

During the previous Awami League administration, the Prime Minister resided at Gonobhaban. Following the 5 August 2024 public uprising that toppled the government, the building was extensively damaged and is now being converted into the ‘July People’s Uprising Memorial Museum’, making it unavailable as an official residence.

The Department of Government Housing has assigned official residences to all new cabinet members, largely concentrated in the ‘Mintripara’ areas of Hair Road, Minto Road, and Bailey Road. A summary of allocations is provided below:

Renovations are ongoing, and officials expect the ministers and state ministers to occupy their new residences after Eid al-Fitr.

This strategic distribution of official residences consolidates the Prime Minister and cabinet members within Dhaka’s central administrative districts, ensuring both operational efficiency and secure access to government offices.
