The Chief of Army Staff of Bangladesh, Waker-uz-Zaman, has reaffirmed the military’s commitment to upholding the ideals of the country’s Liberation War as Bangladesh advances along a democratic path. He stated that the armed forces intend to continue their responsibilities in line with the values and sacrifices demonstrated by the nation’s freedom fighters.

The remarks were made on Thursday at a special iftar and prayer gathering organised by the Bangladesh Army at Dhaka Cantonment in honour of war-wounded freedom fighters. The event brought together senior military officials and a large number of veterans who had sustained injuries during the 1971 war of independence.

Addressing the gathering, General Waker-uz-Zaman described the past eighteen months as a particularly significant and sensitive period for the country. According to him, during this time the armed forces carried out their duties with professionalism, discipline, and a strong sense of responsibility. He emphasised that the military remained steadfast in supporting the public and safeguarding national stability.

“The past eighteen months have been an important chapter for the nation,” he said. “During this time the Bangladesh Army has acted with professionalism and dedication. We have consistently stood beside the people and worked to ensure stability across the country.”

The Army chief further noted that Bangladesh has entered a renewed democratic phase, expressing optimism that this trajectory would continue in the years ahead. He stressed that the inspiration for such progress comes from the courage and ideals of those who fought in the Liberation War of 1971.

During the event, several war-wounded veterans shared recollections of their experiences on the battlefield. Their accounts of hardship, sacrifice, and determination served as a reminder of the immense cost of Bangladesh’s independence. Many of them emphasised the importance of preserving the spirit of the Liberation War for future generations.

General Waker-uz-Zaman also paid tribute to those who lost their lives in various democratic movements, including the July mass uprising, offering prayers for the peace of their souls. He observed that the sacrifices made during different periods of political struggle have played a significant role in shaping the nation’s democratic aspirations.

The veterans attending the iftar expressed gratitude for the Army’s initiative in honouring them. They praised the armed forces for their continued role in protecting national sovereignty and responding effectively during times of crisis. Many also highlighted the importance of maintaining strong civil-military cooperation to ensure the country’s stability and development.

Before the iftar commenced, a special prayer session was held seeking peace, prosperity, and unity for the nation. Participants also prayed for the souls of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the Liberation War and other democratic movements.

As the country continues to navigate political and social challenges, the enduring ideals of the Liberation War—democracy, justice, and national unity—remain central to its future trajectory.
