India Bangladesh Relationship Cannot Face Divorce Says MP

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Member of Parliament, Ghulam Mohammad (GM) Siraj, has asserted that whilst a divorce can transpire between a husband and a wife, such a separation is entirely impossible regarding the bilateral relationship between Bangladesh and its neighbouring nation, India. The opposition lawmaker made these remarks on Monday, 22 June 2026, whilst participating in the general discussion on the proposed national budget for the 2026-2027 fiscal year. The parliamentary debate took place during the twelfth day of the second session, which also marks the first formal budget session of the Thirteenth Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) of Bangladesh.

Delivering his speech before the legislature, GM Siraj emphasised the permanent nature of geographical reality over temporary human contracts. He argued that the bonds between married couples are sometimes temporary and can legally end in a divorce, but the structural relationship between neighbouring countries cannot experience a similar separation. The lawmaker maintained that it is fundamentally impossible for either country to deny or ignore the physical reality of their shared borders, stating explicitly that neither India nor Bangladesh possesses the capacity to disregard or deny the other as a neighbour.

Call for Respectful and Honourable Bilateral Relations

汇During his addressed segment on bilateral diplomacy, the Member of Parliament requested additional time from the speaker to elaborate extensively on the complexities governing India-Bangladesh ties. He stated that the collective desire of the citizens and political entities in Bangladesh is to sustain a friendship with India that is both mutually respectful and deeply honourable. Siraj underscored his belief that because India remains an immediate neighbour, both nations must actively cooperate to ensure that their diplomatic, economic, and cultural friendship does not become a short-lived or temporary arrangement.

Public Reactions and the New High Commissioner’s Comments

The BNP lawmaker drew the attention of the parliament to the recent arrival and public statements of the newly appointed Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi. Siraj noted that upon assuming his diplomatic office, High Commissioner Trivedi had spoken about the bilateral friendship between the two nations using highly poetic language. The diplomat had remarked that both countries exist under the exact same sky and share the same air, concluding that a strong friendship between the two neighbours is an absolute necessity.

However, Siraj pointed out a stark contradiction between these official diplomatic sentiments and the subsequent public response within Bangladesh. He highlighted that a massive storm of controversy had immediately erupted across various Bangladeshi social media platforms following the diplomat’s comments. The Member of Parliament noted that substantial anti-India sentiments were visibly expressed by the public across electronic media channels and online networks. He urged the legislature and regional policymakers to closely examine and understand the root causes behind this widespread public dissatisfaction, asking the critical question of “why” these disputes continue to persist amongst ordinary citizens.

Addressing Border “Push-ins” and the Narcotics Crisis

In the concluding section of his parliamentary address, GM Siraj focused directly on unresolved border disputes and cross-border security challenges. He addressed the controversial issue of border push-ins—referred to by Indian authorities as “push-backs”—and stated unequivocally that this practice must be permanently halted by the Indian government. The lawmaker extended a direct appeal to the current administration in India, urging them to win the hearts of the Bangladeshi people and to foster a genuine, heart-to-heart relationship between the citizens of both nations. He clarified that his political stance is aimed at ending both anti-India rhetoric within Bangladesh and anti-Bangladesh sentiments within India, in order to achieve a state of peaceful coexistence.

Furthermore, Siraj categorised the illegal influx of narcotics across the border as a critical, all-consuming disease that has severely blanketed Bangladesh. He warned the parliament that these sweeping drugs are systematically destroying the country’s youth, the student community, and all segments of civil society, demanding immediate administrative intervention to safeguard the nation.

Summary of Key Points from the Parliamentary Address

The primary arguments and issues raised by Member of Parliament GM Siraj during the June budget session are systematically categorised below:
