India produced a commanding display to defeat New Zealand by 96 runs in a one-sided final and claim the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title, creating history by becoming the first team to win the tournament three times, including back-to-back championships. The triumph unfolded before a packed crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, where India’s explosive batting and disciplined bowling overwhelmed their opponents.

Led by Suryakumar Yadav, India posted a formidable total of 255 for 5 in 20 overs, the highest team score ever recorded in a T20 World Cup final. New Zealand, chasing a daunting target, were dismissed for 159 in 19 overs, unable to mount a sustained challenge against India’s relentless attack.

Explosive Indian Batting

India’s innings was built on an extraordinary batting performance from their top order. Sanju Samson led the charge with a spectacular 89 off 46 deliveries, striking five boundaries and eight towering sixes. His innings provided the backbone of India’s imposing total and electrified the crowd throughout the contest.

Abhishek Sharma delivered one of the most explosive knocks of the tournament, smashing 52 from just 21 balls at a remarkable strike rate of 247.61. His innings included six boundaries and three sixes and set the tone for India’s aggressive approach.

Ishan Kishan further strengthened the onslaught with a rapid 54 from 25 deliveries, featuring four fours and four sixes. The trio dominated the New Zealand bowling attack, ensuring India maintained relentless scoring momentum.

The opening partnership between Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson yielded 98 runs in just 7.1 overs, immediately placing New Zealand under severe pressure. Abhishek eventually fell after being caught by Tim Seifert, but the attacking tempo never diminished.

Samson then added 105 runs with Ishan Kishan for the second wicket, pushing the total well beyond the reach of the New Zealand side. Although Samson narrowly missed a century—falling for 89—his innings remained the defining contribution of the match.

Late in the innings, Shivam Dube added further fireworks, remaining unbeaten on 26 from just eight balls with three boundaries and two sixes. Hardik Pandya contributed 18 from 13 deliveries, ensuring India finished with a commanding total.

India also established a new tournament record in the powerplay. The team scored 92 runs in the first six overs, the highest powerplay score ever recorded in the history of the T20 World Cup.

New Zealand Collapse Under Pressure

In response, New Zealand struggled from the outset against India’s disciplined bowling attack. Despite a fighting half-century from Tim Seifert, who scored 52 from 26 balls with two fours and five sixes, the remainder of the batting line-up failed to withstand the pressure.

Key players fell cheaply. Finn Allen was dismissed for nine runs, while Rachin Ravindra, Glenn Phillips, and Mark Chapman managed only 1, 5, and 3 respectively. By the eighth over, New Zealand had already lost five wickets for just 72 runs, effectively ending any realistic hopes of chasing the target.

Captain Mitchell Santner provided brief resistance with 43 from 35 balls, but his effort merely reduced the margin of defeat.

Dominant Indian Bowling

India’s bowlers completed the emphatic victory with disciplined performances across the attack.

Historic Achievement

India’s victory marks a landmark moment in the history of the T20 World Cup. The team first won the tournament in 2007 under Mahendra Singh Dhoni, defeating Pakistan in the final in Johannesburg. After finishing as runners-up in 2014, India regained the title in the previous edition with a dramatic seven-run victory over South Africa in Bridgetown.

This latest triumph not only secured India’s second consecutive title but also established them as the most successful team in the history of the tournament with three championships.

For New Zealand, meanwhile, the defeat extended their wait for a first T20 World Cup title. Having lost the 2021 final to Australia, the Black Caps once again fell short on the biggest stage.

India’s emphatic performance in Ahmedabad ensured that the night belonged entirely to the defending champions, whose dominance with bat and ball confirmed their place at the pinnacle of the shortest format of international cricket.
