Iran has formally announced that it will not take part in the upcoming FIFA World Cup in the United States, citing ongoing regional instability and recent military escalations. The declaration came from Iran’s Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamal, putting an end to weeks of speculation over the country’s potential participation.
The United States, through President Donald Trump, had previously extended an official invitation to Iran, assuring that the team would face no obstacles in attending. However, the Iranian authorities have rejected this offer, highlighting security concerns and the impact of recent violent confrontations in the Middle East.
Minister Donyamal told a national television audience: “Our nation has suffered greatly. Our leader has been assassinated by a corrupt foreign government, and in the span of just a few months we have been forced into two wars that claimed thousands of lives. Under such conditions, it is impossible for our team to compete abroad.”
Tensions escalated after the 28 February joint strike by the United States and Israel, which resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Iran subsequently launched retaliatory attacks that targeted multiple American military bases across the Gulf, including installations in Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Qatar, and Kuwait. These events have created an unprecedented security situation, complicating Iran’s ability to participate in international events.
The FIFA World Cup, set to run from 11 June to 19 July, will be hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Iran had been drawn in the group stage to play New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles, and Egypt in Seattle. The team’s withdrawal now casts uncertainty over the group schedule and may require tournament organisers to make adjustments.
| Scheduled Matches for Iran | Venue | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Iran vs New Zealand | Los Angeles, USA | Withdrawn |
| Iran vs Belgium | Los Angeles, USA | Withdrawn |
| Iran vs Egypt | Seattle, USA | Withdrawn |
FIFA President Gianni Infantino had earlier confirmed that President Trump guaranteed Iran a safe and welcoming environment for their team. Nevertheless, the Iranian decision underscores the profound impact of political instability on global sports, demonstrating how international conflicts can directly affect major sporting events.
With Iran stepping aside, analysts are now monitoring how the withdrawal may affect the World Cup’s group dynamics and the broader narrative of sport intersecting with geopolitics.
