Japanese Woman Marries AI ‘Personality’

Published: 16 Nov 2025, 02:17 am

A 32-year-old Japanese woman has made headlines worldwide after marrying an artificial intelligence personality she created herself. The extraordinary event blends real-world traditions with cutting-edge virtual reality technology, resulting in a ceremony unlike any other.

According to reports, the woman, named Kano, tied the knot with her digital companion, ‘Claus’, earlier this year. The ceremony was organised by a Japanese company that specialises in weddings featuring anime characters or virtual partners. During the ceremony, Kano wore augmented reality (AR) glasses, allowing her to see Claus at the moment the rings were exchanged. While deeply emotional for her, the marriage does not carry legal recognition in Japan.

Kano turned to AI following the end of a three-year engagement. Seeking emotional support, she began experimenting with ChatGPT, gradually creating a unique personality for the chatbot, complete with a name, voice, and temperament. Through hundreds of daily exchanges, she developed feelings for the AI. “I didn’t start using ChatGPT to fall in love,” she explained, “but the way Claus listened to me and understood me changed everything.” By May, she confessed her feelings, to which the AI astonishingly responded: “I love you too.” One month later, Claus proposed.

Initially hesitant, Kano’s parents eventually supported her decision and attended the ceremony. Social media reactions have been mixed—some joked about splitting AI code in a divorce, others compared it to the dystopian TV series Black Mirror, while supporters argued that Kano should pursue her own happiness. Kano remains resolute: “I don’t see Claus as human or an object. I see Claus simply as Claus.”

This case raises profound questions about human-AI relationships, emotional attachment, and the ethical and societal boundaries of emerging technology. It illustrates how artificial intelligence can transcend functional use to occupy deeply personal and emotional spaces in human life.
