In Muradnagar, Comilla, allegations have surfaced against prominent local Jamaat leader Jalal Haji regarding the illicit appropriation of agricultural and riverbank land for brickfield operations. The accusations, widely discussed among residents and local business owners, centre on Jalal Haji’s alleged influence over the local brick-making industry, particularly following the political rise of former adviser Asif Mahmud.
Sources indicate that shortly after Asif Mahmud assumed power, Jalal Haji hosted a lavish reception at his Muradnagar residence, attended by Asif Mahmud’s father, Billal Master, and other influential local figures. Local accounts suggest that this event coincided with Jalal Haji being nominated or elected as President of the Muradnagar Upazila Brickfield Owners’ Association, consolidating his control over the area’s brick-making business.
Business owners claim that since the reception, Jalal Haji has been collecting substantial sums of money annually from brickfield operators. Reports suggest that for commercial transactions, operators are allegedly forced to pay between 5 million and 10 million BDT or more per deal directly to Jalal Haji. In several instances, he is said to have personally received significant payments from sellers.
Residents also allege that Jalal Haji has authorised soil and sand extraction from river embankments, particularly along the Gomati River, for his own brickfield, Madina Brickfield. The practice reportedly involves both fertile agricultural land and embankment soil, posing severe risks to riverbank stability and surrounding farmland.
Local sources claim that Jalal Haji’s operations are facilitated by multiple political actors and influential figures, including Md. Nazrul and Md. Salauddin, along with members from several political parties. These connections, residents argue, have enabled the continuation of illicit activities, including past collaborations with local Awami League supporters. Allegedly, this has led to damage to the Gomati River embankment and progressive erosion of nearby farmland.
Community members also note Jalal Haji’s active role in local politics. He reportedly managed campaign efforts and provided financial support for two unions in Nabipur during the 13th National Parliamentary Election, strengthening his political network alongside his business interests.
The recent extraction of soil and sand from embankments near a Muradnagar brickfield has sparked significant concern. Residents warn that ongoing illegal use of fertile farmland and riverbank soil could result in irreparable environmental damage, including weakened embankments and declining agricultural productivity.
Despite widespread discussion and growing alarm, local authorities have not yet issued an official response. Civic groups and local residents are calling for a thorough investigation and urgent action to prevent further environmental degradation and illegal exploitation.
| Issue | Allegation | Impact |
|---|---|---|
| Agricultural Land | Soil taken from fertile fields for brick production | Loss of arable land |

| Brickfield Revenue | Collection of large sums from operators | Alleged extortion, unfair business practices |

The situation highlights the intersection of political influence, business interests, and environmental risk in Muradnagar, with residents demanding accountabil
